I have reached the ripe old age of 72, and have never read a Stephen King novel. Where do you recommend I start?

Carrie or Christine. I enjoy his earlier books more though.

As a life long king fan may I recommend bag of bones or insomnia?? Both love stories with a hint of horror thrown in. The dark tower series is pure fantasy but very good. Enjoy!!! He's also done a few short stories collections

I started with 11.22.63 and really enjoyed it. I've also really enjoyed his shorter fiction like The Green Mile, Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, and The Body.

My favourite is The Stand. Also Christine .

My fave is The Stand which is the first one I read. I also highly recommend Rose Madder and Needful Things and Bag of Bones.
What King does so well is these little vignette stories of people that capture the human condition so well.

He has "phases" - the early stuff is more generic horror like Cujo and Carrie. His 90s/00s phase is more mystical, like Insomnia and Dark tower series. 00s/10s he strays into detective like tales, and later 10s he's bringing in more human condition stories - 11/22/62 is amazing as is Duma Key.

Short story collections are fab, I do recommend Skeleton Key and Four Seasons.

The old stuff. The ones under Richard bachman as well. He was good at it back then

My favorite is also The Stand, but its very long. Misery and the green mile are also favorites, I also really like Desperation and Needful Things. I can't remember which set of short stories it's in but The Shawshank Redemption is fantastic.

I'm trying to think of any I didn't get on with, I've not read much of his later stuff though, think Dreamcatcher is the most recent one I've read. Geralds game was a bit crap if I recall correctly.

I'm a King fan, my adult child not so much.

So from me you'd read The Stand, from my adult child it would be The Green Mile. That coffee, like the drink (green mile joke).

The books published under his pen name Richard Bachman actually some his best. The Long Walk and The Running Man are masterpieces.
