I wonder if you can help me.

I need more suggestions for listens that are books that are light and entertaining - best seller type but with no murder or crime element but contain a dilemma or a crisis iyswim.

Not chic lit either please.

So, for example, I recently listened to Worst Idea Ever by Jane Fallon. Something like that. Friend or relationship conflict maybe.

Just kind of feel I've had enough murder/kidnap etc. for the time being.

I listen to this kind of book when I'm doing tedious housework etc and so what something I'm keen to get back to.

My fave audio books in that ilk are Strange Sally Diamond and The Instrumentalist.

I struggle with audiobooks as well but I quite enjoyed the seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo
Also one I got one on libby which was free! It was called cold people and although it was kind of strange I enjoyed it.

You could maybe look at some of Jodi Picoult's novels which have a dilemma/decision element or family issues, but without murder/crime.

Papergirl1968 · 17/11/2024 21:36

I’m listening to Marian Keyes’ The Woman Who Stole my Life on the Libby app, which is free for library members.
It’s my first audiobook and I’m really enjoying it.

Papergirl1968 · 17/11/2024 21:36

I love reading Jodi Picoult too.

Beth O’Leary’s books could be good for you.

Blackcountryexile · 17/11/2024 22:24

Something by Rachel Joyce or Ruth Hogan
The Lido by Libby Page.

I recently listened to You are Here by David Nichols on Audible

I really liked it. Quite gentle but I was fully invested in the characters by the end.

Crispynoodle · 18/11/2024 23:13

Lucinda Riley Seven Sisters blooming fab especially in audio I'm not a fan of chick lit at all loved going around the world with these

I’ve found one of my own! 😊

It does contain a murder but is also what I mean about a dilemma.

It’s Wrong Place, Wrong Time by Gillian McCallister. It’s narrated by Lesley Sharp who is one of my favourite actors.

So it fits my criteria because it’s ordinary people where something occurs (a challenge?) and it’s trying to work out what to do rather than solve a murder, something more than a whodunnit!

If you don't mind a murder being within the book, 'None of this is True' by Lisa Jewell might fit the bill. Much of it takes the form of podcast episodes and interviews so it works perfectly as an audio book. You know 'something' has happened but only gradually do you find out what.

The Nothing Girl by Jodi Taylor, and the second in the series The Something Girl would suit what you're looking for. I really enjoyed them.

I second this. I really enjoyed the book and audio book.
Sally Page's books are a straightforward listen and very enjoyable.

endofthecorridoor · 07/12/2024 17:31

I second strange sally diamond really enjoyed that as a change
I've just finished mythos Steven fry also really enjoyable and different
Kate Atkinson is a good bet for none murder books. Life after life
If you have not read the book or watched the series already I also thought lessons in chemistry worked really well as an audio book
I listen with DH who is dyslexic and can't enjoy an actual book so my pics are slightly different to what I actually read myself

The Salt Path. It's a true story, there's a film coming out next year.

OrangeCrusher · 11/12/2024 20:39

What about Terry Pratchett? I’d particularly recommend the witches books starting with Witches Abroad. You can hear them in the old version, which I prefer as Nigel Planner is amazing but some people don’t like the old sound quality. Or, the newer version with Indira Varma which are also very good. I can’t deal with anything grim or suspenseful so these are brilliant fun and very cleverly done.
