I am at a loss without a book in my hands but have run out so am off to the oxfam bookshop tomorrow.
what do you think i should look out for?

i tend to have phases where i'll read a few of a particular authors.
recently i've done

Daphne du'maurier
Dickens
Jodi Picoult
agatha christie
Kate atkinson

I like clasics and older stuff that takes a bit of concentration - equally quite like something easy on the mind.

any ideas?

I'm reading Madame Bovary at the moment and its really lovely. you do need to concentrate and its quite wordy at times with the descriptions but lovely all the same.
Another good read is "The Thirteenth Tale", can't remember the author's name but again, another good read, alot easier on the concentration level with some really good twists and turns in the plot

I recently read the Time Travellers Wife which was a wonderful love story and am half way through A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini which is also fantastic. Have to warn you though...you will need some tissues for both.

collision · 27/04/2008 16:17

James Patterson!!

all of his are brilliant!!

TillyScoutsmum · 27/04/2008 16:19

Another vote for Khaled Hosseini - both 1000 splendid suns and The Kiterunner

Just finished The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon which I really enjoyed

Time Traveller's Wife and We Need to Talk About Kevin are both favourties as well

northernrefugee39 · 27/04/2008 16:35

Yes! Thousand Splendid Suns! It's wonderful, and the Kite Runner.

I didn't like The time traveller's Wife, but i think I'm the only person I know, didn't like lovely Bones either.

I'm really loving William Boyd at the moment. Have read a batch and I think he is a great writer.
Reckless
Blue Afternoon
New confessions
Any Human Heart

I never meet anyone else who's read them, but recommend them.

Charlotte Mendleson. When we were Bad, Daughter's of Jerusalem Love in Idleness

If you like detective novels without gory details and enjoy Italian food etc then I have also been reading Donna Leon novels. They are set in Venice and the main characters are endearing. The novels can be topical but they are very easy to read.

BBBee · 27/04/2008 17:11

atonement

please read it if you haven't. It is my tip top tip top book.

scottishmummy · 27/04/2008 17:14

rebecca

SniffyHock · 27/04/2008 17:16

More votes for Khaled Hosseini!! Truly wonderful.

What about 'Jane Eyre'? I'm sure you've read it before but IMO it gets better every time. Ditto for 'To Kill a Mockingbird'.

ChippyMinton · 27/04/2008 17:17

Anita Shreve. Have just read Light on Snow, and All he Ever Wanted. Several other titles including The Pilot's Wife are meant to be good.

northernrefugee39 · 27/04/2008 17:21

Chippy, I love Anita Shrieve, yes the Pilot's Wife is good, more suspense than the others.

I really like Donna Tartt too, but there are only two of hers, The secret History and the Little friend, both excelent.

northernrefugee39 · 27/04/2008 17:21

OOhh yes Atonement, Saturday is good too.

cyteen · 27/04/2008 17:50

northernrefugee, I've read The New Confessions and I LOVE it. Such an amazing book - I had to remind myself several times that this was not a real autobiography Have also read A Good Man In Africa and really want to read more of his...hopefully my dad will lend me all his Boyd books while I'm on maternity leave.

northernrefugee39 · 27/04/2008 17:54

Oh cyteen, you are the first person to have read them amongst my female friends!

Blue Afternoon is wonderful, and Reckless.
Have a great maternity leave!

northernrefugee39 · 27/04/2008 17:55

Cyteen, Any Human heart is similar to The New Confessions in style, so you'd probably like it.

TillyBookClub · 01/05/2008 12:55

Naughty Nigel, we're voting on the Orange Prize shortlist in Mumsnet bookclub - looks like When We Were Bad is going to win at the moment (the author's style is quite like Kate Atkinson, also an Orange Prize nominee).

If you fancy reading that, or joining the bookclub chat, then you can check out the selection here and you can vote here

TillyScoutsmum, not sure if you're still on this thread, I just wanted to say noticed your profile and slightly weirdly, my name is Tilly and I'm about to have my second son, who I'm going to name Atticus. We've just done To Kill a Mockingbird in the Mumsnet Bookclub and all loved it second time round, even more than when we first read it I think.

Everyone more than welcome to join the online bookclub, btw - the vote for May book of the Month closes tomorrow at 8pm...

Bobbiewickham · 01/05/2008 12:56

I've just read The Importance of being Kennedy by Laurie Graham - that was very good.

TillyScoutsmum · 01/05/2008 13:01

Hello Tilly Atticus would definately have been a contender if dd had been a boy We were contemplating Scout as a first name for dd but the Demi Moore thing put us off

I will definately give the book club a go this month. Good Luck with the impending arrival of Atticus

TillyBookClub · 02/05/2008 12:16

I know, isn't it a bummer when some celeb nicks your name - I felt that way with Sadie Frost calling her son Rafferty. Suddenly made it really pretentious sounding. Would love to have you in bookclub, see you there (unless Atticus makes a big song and dance on his arrival)

TillyScoutsmum · 02/05/2008 12:28

Rafferty was another strong contender for us (DP is a big Liverpool fan and loved the Raffa connection ). Maybe next time
