I have two credits burning a hole in my 'pocket'! I need a new, gripping book to listen to.

I love the Cormoran Strike séries and I've listened to all of them multiple times.

Authors I love:
Margaret Atwood
Dickens
Donna Tartt
Sarah Waters
Stephen King

Genres I love:
Post-apocalyptic scenarios
Crime
Horror (not gore)
Historical fiction

Books I didn't like recently:
Rivers of London
Piranesi
A Little Life

Any suggestions most welcome!

I have just finished Robert Harris's latest historical novel, Precipice. Very good listen.

Like you I've loved the Cormoran Strike books, hoping the next one is out before too long.

Me too!!! What's been your favourite so far? Mine is Troubled Blood.

I think I liked The Running Grave best, I enjoyed all the earlier ones, but was not keen on The Ink Black Heart, and nearly gave up after that. So glad I kept going, even the Ink Black Heart grew on me on re-listening.

I’m just listening to In a Place of Darkness by Stuart McBride. Standalone novel ( he has a series set in Aberdeen). I’m enjoying it very much, crime but he has a humorous style. And it’s a good long book which I like.

I’d also second Precipice as that was the last I listened to! If you’ve not listened to them, try James Oswald Inspector Maclean novels. Set in Edinburgh with a few supernatural elements, but great writing!

ChessieFL · 30/10/2024 15:41

If you like the Strike books try the Maeve Kerrigan series by Jane Casey. They’re really good and similar focus on the relationships between the characters.

notatinydancer · 30/10/2024 17:47

The Nightingale by Kristen Hannah.

NotAPenguin · 30/10/2024 22:34

Richard Osman's We Solve Murders - I haven't read any of his other books and only listened this because it's read by Nicola Walker but I really enjoyed it

Pottingup · 30/10/2024 22:37

Have you read the Shardlake books? Tudor detective series and just fab.
Also read James by Percival Everett because it’s funny, thought provoking and all round good.

clawmachine · 30/10/2024 23:03

I really enjoyed The God of the Woods by Liz Moore, it's a mystery set in a summer camp in the 1950s/70s, told from different character's perspectives.

Another one is I Have Some Questions For You by Rebecca Makkai - a woman goes back to teach at her old school where her friend was murdered in the 90s. The narration on audible is really good.

Seconded. At present it is a stand alone book so you don’t need to have read any of his others.

Elif Shafak - there are rivers in the sky ...just finished this beautiful book.... and am currently in the middle of Prima Facie by Suzie Miller which is read by Jodie Comer.

I absolutely LOVED the audiobook of Prima Facie!

Frazzlededucator · 30/10/2024 23:47

If you like historical fiction then try The Seven Sisters by Lucinda Riley.

ludocris · 31/10/2024 00:09

For apocalyptic fiction I recommend:

The Commune series by Joshua Gayou
After it Happened by Devon C Ford
Gray by Lou Cadle
The Oil Apocalypse series by Lou Cadle
Swan Song by Robert C McCammon
End of Days series by John Birmingham

I could recommend a load of zombie apocalypse stuff which is my personal favourite but that's all gory so probably not what you're after.

Vargas · 31/10/2024 00:22

All the colours of the dark - Chris Whitaker. Fab!

avaritablevampire · 31/10/2024 00:35

Dean koontz the Jane Hawk series are good if you like dystopian type books.
I've just finished Borley rectory. It's not particularly exciting, but it's very interesting... you get the main story, interspersed with interesting historical facts, and then an untelling of the story at the end, I don't want to give anymore away and yes I know there is no such word as 'untelling'! But it's fitting in this instance!

StrikesAtticFlat · 31/10/2024 07:39

Oh WOW thank you so much!! Lots to research and then I can choose!

I loved The God of the Woods too.

@ludocris I thought I'd read pretty much all the post apocalyptic fiction there is going but I've only read Swan Song from your list!

I looked in my audible library and I also have None of This is True by Lisa Jewell which I had downloaded a while ago and subsequently forgotten about.

The family Experiment by John marrs
The one both by John marrs
Dark Lullaby by Polly ho- yen

This are speculative fiction so black mirror style rather than apocalyptic but I love apocalyptic too and loved these.

Your likes - and dislikes! - match mine pretty well so I'm going to say

children of Time - sci fi
The Wool trilogy - dystopian and bloody superb
My fav from the Booker prize shortlist 2024 which is absolutely sublime, The Safekeep my fav book of the year
The Elodie harper series set in a brothel in pompei - fabulous stuff and you'll feel like you lived there.

anythinginapinch · 31/10/2024 08:12

And as ever, anyone and everyone should read /listen to the Master and Commander series by Patrick O'Brien

Guardup · 31/10/2024 08:22

I can recommend the quiet end of the world by Lauren James.

I like all the same books as you and didn’t enjoy the same ones you listed so we have the same taste- I loved the book above

ludocris · 31/10/2024 08:26

Oh for historic fiction, Ken Follett. The Kingsbridge series and the Century trilogy.

StrikesAtticFlat · 31/10/2024 12:01

@anythinginapinch I tried and gave up on Wool - maybe I should give it another go??
