I went through a spell of reading westerns and the name that comes to mind is Alan le May - wrote lots of novels some of which were turned into films. The two most rememberable being The Searchers (John Wayne) and The Unforgiven (Burt Lancaster and Audrey Hepburn) both extremely good films but then I do enjoy the old style westerns - thanks mom for being a John Wayne fan

Laura Ingalls Wilder - Little House on the Prairie are thoroughly enjoyable - I re-read them all a couple of years ago. They are accounts of her life growing up in the west. I'm not sure your DS will enjoy them - you might!

Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee - First Nations account of the Wild West - I was extremely interested in the plight of the First Nations, as a 15/16 year old I sobbed my heart out reading this book

Your local library might have a section where you can find the names of some of the authors

There will be books on the the Hole in the Wall gang, Jesse James, the Gunfight at the OK coral, also the Battle of the Big Horn

Maybe not quite a western but I wonder if he would enjoy Dances with Wolves by Michael Blake. Set during the American Civil War It centres around John Dunbar who is sent to the ‘last Frontier’ It tells how he becomes part of a Comanche Tribe and the impact of white settlers on Native Americans.

it was made into a film with Kevin Costner ( if your not a Kevin Costner fan don’t let that put you off ). The book is excellent. The film is too if a little over long.

Thanks. Didn’t realise that one started off as a book

I don’t think many people do. I certainly didn’t till I saw the book on Amazon.

There is a follow up book called The Holy Road still with John Dunbar as part of the tribe but the background, which if I remember correctly, focuses much more on the loss of freedom of the Plains Native Americans and the forcing of them into reservations.

@2doglady

I also didn't know Dances with Wolves was a book, I got into Sci Fi Fantasy and really haven't read much else although just got myself a book on the Norman Conquest - bit of a leap there😂

It's on my to read list now
