Probably a stupid question. New releases?

For years I have pigeonholed myself reading only historical fiction but the last two years have seen me branch out into more popular fiction and I’m a better reader for it.

My question is where does one find out about the latest up and coming and new releases? Everyone always seems to be reading the new popular book but I don’t know where to find them 😂 help me be current?

I get email newsletters from publishers and from Waterstones and I read the reviews in the Saturday Guardian and the Observer.

Birdscratch · 23/10/2024 22:18

I have new releases I’m excited about bookmarked in the order they’re going to come out. I’m up to next summer! If you want a more general ‘what’s popular now’

And no, I don’t know why there’s an erasable cat pencil in their list but it also includes so many books I’ve seen recommended lately.

Moier · 23/10/2024 22:21

I listen to Richard and Judy's book club.

TheGodOfSmallPotatoes · 23/10/2024 22:31

This is great, really appreciate the ideas! And the cat pencil 😂

How do you listen to a book club? I’m curious?

Amazon. In their book section they have Top New Releases and a Best Sellers and More tabs.
If you search by author they often have their next book listed in advance of publication with the due date.

TheDandyLion · 23/10/2024 22:52

Bookstagram and booktube. Follow a couple different people who seem to have the same tastes as me and usually take notes of what they're reading and reviewing.

DrivingThePlot · 24/10/2024 07:32

You could also follow some publishing houses on Instagram. They will post what's coming. Also you could follow some of your favourite authors, who will also be promoting their new books.

Preppingpenguin · 24/10/2024 15:28

Tiktok, I follow several booktok accounts and authors, many sell their own books on Tiktok a lot cheaper than publishers and give updates on new ones

JaninaDuszejko · 24/10/2024 17:04

As well as everything listed above I look at book blogs and literature prize lists. And read Mumsnet, the 50 booker threads are full of real reviews of recent (and not so recent) books.

TheGodOfSmallPotatoes · 24/10/2024 17:17

I have seen the 50 book thread but I am always reticent to pop into a long running thread like that. It might be an idea though to spark some interesting future reads.

Why are you so interested in new releases? I can't remember the last time I read a contemporary work. Most of it is rubbish. You have three thousand years of literature to choose from! As I type, I've got a pile of novels next to me, only one of which was published in the 21st century (Hilary Mantel). The rest are by Anita Brookner, Iris Murdoch, Evelyn Waugh, George Eliot, Virginia Woolf, Thomas Hardy, etc. We see technology improving, and so we assume art improves as well. It doesn't. The latest Iphone may be an improvement on the last, but the latest novel certainly isn't. J. K. Rowling, for example, is a vastly inferior children's writer to C. S. Lewis, Roald Dahl or Lewis Carrol

I asked this before and got a few unhelpful responses 😂. I tend to look at good reads.

Which ones because I searched for booktok and it was all really annoying

Check out the accounts below, I should add I'm mainly into dark romance so the accounts and authors below focus on that genre.
@ TracyLorraine.Author (amazing author)
@ Karly_Reads
@ Rosa.Lee.Reads (she's also an incredible author)

I have subscriptions to Red and Food Housekeeping and they both do book reviews each month.

I've tried to find people on insta to follow or a good podcast but nothing good so far.

Reece Witherspoon does some good recommendations in her book club though.

It's a very friendly thread so please feel free to join. At the beginning of each thread most people post a list of what they've read and those in bold are their 5 star reads and those in italics are the DNF or dreadful reads. The last thread of the year often has some aggregate data on the threads best reads.

Phineyj · 25/10/2024 17:45

If you would specifically like to know about new releases in historical fiction then BBC History magazine reviews them. The December issue should be out soon so should have a bunch of diverse historians saying what they'd like for Christmas.

Respectfully, if you don’t read any contemporary fiction, you have no business making sweeping generalisations about it.

OP, read reviews of new work in the book sections of newspapers, follow The Bookseller, the LRB and TLS on Instagram, and her into the habit of dropping into bookshops and having a look at the new arrivals in genres that interest you.

YellowphantGrey · 26/10/2024 18:40

You all need the Fantastic Fiction website! You can save the page to your desktop as it doesn't have an app.

Once you've started saving authors on your list, it let's you know their next new release and and Author recommendations

Book accounts on Instsgram, publishing houses on Instagram, Waterstones has a coming soon section, I use Storygraph and they have book recommendations on there too

EmeraldRoulette · 26/10/2024 18:43

@JaninaDuszejko what's DNF please?
