Christmas Reading with the Kids

We have recently read Swallows and Amazons and the Railway Children and loved them. So can say that the kids (both primary aged - juniors) can cope with a longer, slower paced classics.

They also enjoyed Harry Potter (first two only, they scare easily) Eldest likes things like Diary of a Wimpy kid, youngest likes airy and unicorn books!

I would like to read something to them over Christmas, my first thought was the Chronicles of Narnia, what would you read to your late primary aged children to build cozy Christmas memories.

Thanks

Definitely Narnia!

And

The Hobbit
The Dark Is Rising series (the second is set at Christmas but you need to read them in their order).
101 Dalmatians
Little Women (the story opens at Christmas, so very suitable).
A Christmas Carol (inevitably).

(But I don’t think you can prescribe what they’ll remember of their childhoods - so do the things for their own sake.)

A Child's Christmas In Wales by Dylan Thomas. There is more than one edition, but the best for children (and many adults) is the one with illustrations by Edward Ardizzone. It shows the magic of Christmas and the warmth and messiness of everyday life and it's ideal for bedtime reading.

I always recommend Diana Wynne Jones's Chrestomanci series. Not Christmassy but wonderful and imaginative and fun to read together.
