Horsey books

Dd (11) has read and adores all the Stacy Gregg and Lauren St John books as well as Finding Wonder. She has re-read them all several time and is desperate for some new and interesting horsey stories. Any recommendations?

The TV show of Flambards was splendid - I adored it. I also had a crush on Mark. I remember reading that the actress who played Christina lied about being able to ride, then had to learn to ride sidesaddle when she got the part.

TessaTassom · 22/10/2024 19:13

Ohh, Tv. show recommendations would also be fab. Where can she watch Flambards?

Has she watched Heartland series? There are so many episodes and seasons, it's brilliant and something you could enjoy together.

DizzyBumble · 23/10/2024 14:22

anyone know of any adult horsey books? Read a horsey murder mystery years ago that wasn't awful but can't remember what it was called

HeadNorth · 23/10/2024 14:37

Horse by Geraldine Brooks is worth reading. Most of it is utterly absorbing about a racehorse in the pre-civil war American south. Unfortunately there is also a modern day story that is a bit clunky and spoils what is otherwise a really interesting read.
Barn Blind by Jane Smiley is another suggestion - it is years since I read it, but I remember it being good, if sad - horse obsession taken too far, to the detriment of family.

Riders?

KM Peyton - No Roses Round the Door is an adult one. She wrote a couple of others, but I forget the title.
Siegfried Sassoon - Memoirs of a Foxhunting Man (its sequels, Sherston's Progress and another title I forget, are in WW1.)
Nicholas Evans - The Horse Whisperer

Not "Horsy Horsy" but nevertheless worth a read.
The Horse Dancer by Jojo Moyes

EBearhug · 23/10/2024 14:53

Dick Francis

Oh these take me back. I loved the saddle club, Jill series (black boy and rapide both terrible horse names!) and the one about the girl who won a pony, Jackie. It was my absolute dream so I read that over and over. The red pony by John Steinbeck is lovely. I didn't love Jinny I thought she was very annoying but the first book is beautiful. The thelwell books were always fun too.

The red pony has a bloody awful scene where they kill a horse with a hammer so I wouldn't say it's really suitable for a 12 year old!

Dick Francis

For a 12 year old?

Nicholas Evans - The Horse Whisperer

Horse Whisperer has sex in it and isn't remotely suitable for a 12 year old!

DizzyBumble was asking for adult horsey books. Though I reckon I was probably 12 or 13 when I first read a Dick Francis.

Heartland is a great program and I believe there are books as well.
Free rein my son enjoyed this too.
Oh and Harry and Snowman is a fabulous film about a real life horse.
With regards to books the ones already mentioned.
Saddle club
Jinny books
The black stallion
Clare balding
Esme higgs books.
Also what about biographies etc from real riders?
Such as Carl Hester
If she likes Megan Elphick she has a book jam bam the badminton pony.

Fuddlefiend · 23/10/2024 20:43

The black stallion books are really good but a bit old.

The ones I was OBSESSED with as a 12 year old was the horses of half moon ranch by Jenny oldfield. Quite a big series.

Natalie Keller Reinert is a good one, she writes horse books set in Ocala and other parts of Florida. They do get a bit formulaic - stroppy horsewoman falls in love with unlikely love interest, but they are fun to read and there’s no sex scenes or anything.

just be be clear these are NOT children’s books

TotalEclipseOfMyFart · 28/10/2024 17:48

As a pony mad 11 year old in the early 90s, I loved the following:

the Jill series - Ruby Ferguson
The eventing trilogy - Caroline Akrill

Patricia Leitch books including and especially Jimmy at Finmory. I think there were about 12 books in that series alone.

The Saddle Club

Christine Pullein-Thompson
Josephine Pullein - Thompson

Black Beauty - Anna Sewell

I seem To recall a series called Silver Brumby but can't recall the authoit's name , Elaine Mitchell seems to ring a bell.

she may also enjoy:

My Friend Flicka- Mary O Hara

National Velvet- Enid Bagnold

Thelwell

TotalEclipseOfMyFart · 28/10/2024 17:49

Oh, and of course, The Horse Whisperer by Nicholas Evans.

Littlebitpsycho · 28/10/2024 17:59

My DD really enjoyed the Stacy Gregg Pony Club Rivals series - set in a horsey boarding school in America.

Modern and not babyish - aimed at pre-teens

tiredandbaggy · 29/10/2024 19:18

this thread is bringing back such happy memories - I loved the Jinny books, Jill owns a pony, sadly club and black stallion. I came on to recommend my friend Flicka and it’s sequels though - I was obsessed with those.

oh and for the person looking for adult horsey books definitely Riders and Polo!

PhilsMajicHat · 30/10/2024 21:33

I loved the Jinny books

I also loved a prince amongst ponies. I had a battered old copy that was my aunts when she was young, and I read it over and over
