I rarely have time to read anymore but miss it so much. I have a holiday coming up and I am on the hunt for an amazing new book. Please help! I usually trawl on here for ideas. Examples of books I have loved and was recommended on here over the years are; The Goldfinch, The book Thief, Life after life, The kite runner, Eleanor Oliphant, Crawdads, and loads of thrillers in between! Has anyone got a recommendation for me! Thanks in advance Grin

The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. It’s amazing.

WingingItMam48 · 14/10/2024 10:43

If you liked the kite runner, there are two more Khaled Hosseini books that you might like. A thousand splendid suns and And the mountains echoed. Haven't yet read And the mountains echoed but absolutely loved A thousand splendid suns, it's quite a difficult harrowind read about women and domestic violence in Afghanistan but excellent

Oh yes I have read both the other ones too! Great books 😊

I’ve just read All the Colours of the Dark, it’s certainly a long read, has some great characters & plot

Caledonian Road by Andrew O'Hagan - a great read

If you liked the Goldfinch what about Donna Tartt's other books? The Secret History or The Little Friend? Or Ann Patchett, Bel Canto?

Bernadinetta · 14/10/2024 19:07

The Heart’s Invisible Furies by John Boyne

Life After Life by Kate Atkinson

The Seven Sisters series by Lucinda Riley

ArcheryAnnie · 14/10/2024 19:08

I recently loved Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver.

I adore the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik, but that'll only work for you if you like either Regency novels, or the Patrick O"Brien books, or alternative history and big dragons....

BamberGirl · 14/10/2024 19:10

Another recommendation for Demon Copperhead! Epic and amazing!

TianasBayou · 14/10/2024 19:11

If you want lots of pages and history in your epic, the Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett.

OMGsamesame · 14/10/2024 19:13

Have you read Shantaram?
Or A Suitable Boy?

Kayemm · 14/10/2024 19:13

I second The Heart's Invisible Furies.

If you need another suggestion, a good few years ago there was a craze on here for The Quincunx. Every other thread in Books was about it. It's an absolute door stop of a book but it's an amazing read.

Also never read A Little Life!

Eyesopenwideawake · 14/10/2024 19:14

To Serve Them All My Days by RF Delderfield

The Pursuit of Happiness and State of the Union, both by Douglas Kennedy

MoodEnhancer · 14/10/2024 19:15

Song of Achilles and Circe, both by Madeline Miller. Best novels I have read in the last few years.

thehopefulgardener · 14/10/2024 20:04

Still Life by Sarah Winman. I was a bit lost for a few days after finishing it - best thing I've read in years, post Life After Life/A God in Ruins.

And another vote for Demon Copperhead

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 14/10/2024 20:15

Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr is wonderful. Another vote for Demon Copperhead. It comes a close second to Cloud Cuckoo Land. I also loved The Heart's Invisible Furies and The Shadow of the Wind.

Mercurial123 · 14/10/2024 20:25

Covenant of Water was really interesting.

claracluck1978 · 14/10/2024 20:37

I've just finished Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow

It's not my usual type of novel but I unexpectedly really enjoyed it

BingThing · 14/10/2024 20:47

My last few holiday reads have been...The Island of Missing Trees - Elif Shafak. Half a world away - Mike Gayle. The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair by Joel Dicker. The Bee Sting by Paul Murray (not finished it yet but great so far). Demon Copperhead is excellent 👌

Beamur · 14/10/2024 20:49

All the light we cannot see?

theseriousmoonlight · 14/10/2024 20:52

Came on to say Pillars of the Earth and Wolf Hall. Excellently epic, brilliant series and beautifully written.

Wolf Hall (trilogy)

Though it’s so gripping I can easily imagine managing to miss my actual holiday as I just sat in a cafe, reading it…

FaintlyMacabre · 14/10/2024 21:10

A Suitable Boy

ladyditaverner · 14/10/2024 21:11

The Far Pavilions is truly epic.
