Fantasy books written by women

I tried to read Magician by raymond e feist the other day - 2 chapters in and the only female that had appeared is a housewife whose only function was to care for the main character (while all the men have professions), and one pretty princess.

I think i need more fantasy written by women.

I love robin hobb and have read all of hers. I like naomi novik and Frances hardinge. Sarah j maas doesn't appeal. I don't like books with a lot of romance as i feel it always gets in the way of the story.

What else should i try?

Anne McCaffrey?;

LivingDeadGirlUK · 10/10/2024 18:49

I second Anne McCaffrey, the dragonriders of Pern series is brilliant.

I'm currently reading Tad Williams Otherland series which is Sci Fi rather than fantasy but its really good and has some great female characters in it.

Ursula Le Guin
Octavia Butler
Margaret Atwood (poss more sci-fi than fantasy though)

Enoughwiththisshit · 10/10/2024 18:54

Oh my goodness - definitely try Anna Smith Spark!

Amazing, amazing writer.

I enjoyed A E Rayne’s Furyck Saga if you’re after a series

Brunelofbrio · 10/10/2024 19:02

I was going to suggest Robin Hobbs but see you are already a fan! Have you tried Anne McCaffrey - I like the Crystal singer series. It’s a bit of a fantasy / sci fi mix but very readable

I liked Sheri S. Tepper's The Gate to Women's Country (haven't read her other works). The set-up is a society of women, with a men's war camp outside the gates, with the sons visiting their mothers and having the option of staying in adulthood under the rules of the female society.

IntriguingFactJumble · 10/10/2024 19:23

Katharine Kerr's Deverry series.

GreenSmithing · 10/10/2024 19:27

The Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold. The follow up, Paladin of Souls, has one of my favourite female protagonists of any genre.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 10/10/2024 19:34

Anne mccaffrey's writing is amazing. Dragonriders, crystal singer, tower and the hive, catteni series, brain and brawn, all have really strong women. Restoree is great too - it's a stand alone. They all have romance though.

If you like Feist's writing style, try the empire trilogy which he's written with Janny Wurts. (although the magician books are fantastic, so if also recommend persevering with them too if you can)

sillysarnies · 10/10/2024 19:39

Melanie Rawn. I really enjoyed her Sunrunner books. There is also The Golden Key which is a fantastic collaboration between her and 2 other female authors - Kate Elliott and Jennifer Roberson. She started a new trilogy which is also amazing but she has only written the first 2 books and I don't know if she will ever finish it. Similarly the Jaran books by Kate Elliott - first 4 of a set of 7 but I don't think she'll finish it though she's written a lot of other books since. They are all amazing though! And another vote for Anne McCaffrey here too.

Another one for Octavia Butler!
Kindered is one of my favourite reads for this year!

Also loved the the Daevabad Trilogy by Shannon A. Charaborty

Ooh! Yes! They're brilliant!

Robin Hobb. The Farseer trilogy is one of the best I've ever read.

indigoemerald · 10/10/2024 19:49

Maria V Snyder has some good books

I'm right there with you - my favourite books ever, as well as the liveships trilogy. I think that might be the problem - nothing else measures up!

I like jodi taylor but haven't read most of these others so I'm off for a browse on Amazon, thank you! Anne mccaffrey seems to have the most votes so I might start with her.

They're children's/ young adult books, but Tamora Pierce and Dianna Wynne Jones both are enjoyable as an adult as well.

I also enjoyed a fair bit by Trudi Canavan.
