Bereft after finishing outlander

As the name suggests...

I started reading the Outlander books in March and have just finished the ninth and final (currently published)

After 6 months I feel bereft! I loved having a long series to get hooked into to avoid making decisions each week and to keep me reading.

What can I jump into next that'll give me the same feeling, do you think?

Have you read the Lord John novels?

MaryasBible · 28/09/2024 18:27

I’m half way through the third and I already know I’m going to miss them. No suggestions but watching.

daisydaisyrose · 28/09/2024 18:36

Well there is only one solution, you have to watch the series!

I gave up after Drums of Autumn but I'm pretty sure Diana Gabaldon has said the most recent one won't be the last.

If you want another meaty historical saga to get into (albeit without as much sex) try Cynthia Harrod-Eagles Morland Dynasty series. Or if you like the time slip element then anything by Barbara Erskine.

Or watch the TV adaptation, it's brilliant!

You do what I did and start at the beginning again 😄

You could try the Sara Donati series Into the Wilderness. I've read them all ( mention of the Frasers in them too) they are set in north New York at the same time as Outlander.

Once you've read them you can read her Gilded Age series which is set about 50 years later in actual NY. I found them fascinating as they show the building of NY.

Also listen to Outlander on Audible, Davina Porter is brilliant as the narrator

Mollyplop999 · 28/09/2024 19:27

KillingMeDeftIy I did too. I lost interest once they went to America.

Meant to say, try The Bronze Horseman. Three big books, epic love story but also historical context.

Nothing compares to Outlander I'm afraid! The tenth (and supposedly final) book is due at some point. Diana Gabaldon posts excerpts on her Facebook page occasionally.

Try again, the first one in America is odd but once they get into the swing of it there story really broadens and is so detailed and amazing!

Agree with Lord John ones if you haven’t already.
Ones I read to assuage the gaps at similar times:
Game of Thrones series (read it, not tv show - loved the tv show but books are great)
The Last Kingdom - Viking historical series
Hornblower series or Aubrey Maturin (Patrick o Brian) series - both naval warfare books set at a similar ish time to some of the outlander
I tried some Philippa Gregory but some of it was too ridiculous
Got well into Georgette Heyer
Lots of Jane Austen and Elizabeth Gaskell

I have seen the tv series, that's what got me into the books!

Have to say as beautiful as Sam is I don't think he's being the right direction to really be Jamie! Tv Jamie comes across as a bit dim rather than pensive...

I always re read my favourites or listen on audible. Book 6, 8 and 3 in that order. Absolutely loved A breath of snow and ashes.

I read somewhere that the TV show was aimed at showing Claire as the powerful woman/ role model in an industry dominated by strong Male characters. So TV Jamie's attributes were toned down. I personally don't mind a lot.
