50 Books Challenge 2024 Part Seven

1000 replies

Southeastdweller · 14/09/2024 22:28

Welcome to the seventh thread of the 50 Book Challenge for this year.

The challenge is to read fifty books (or more!) in 2024, though reading fifty isn't mandatory. Any type of book can count, and please try to let us all know your thoughts on what you've read.

If possible, please can you embolden your titles and maybe authors as well of books you've read or going to read? It makes it much easier to keep track.

Some of us bring over to the new thread lists of the books we've read so far, but again - this is your choice.

The first thread is here, the second one here , the third one here, the fourth one here , the fifth one here and the sixth one here.

What are you reading?

Thank you for the new thread @Southeastdweller

I'm in the middle of Katharine Parr The Sixth Wife, the final volume in Alison Weir's Six Tudor Queens series which I've read on and off over the last couple of years.

It's an easy read however definitely not the best of the series. I don't know whether it's lazy writing or editing, but there are some anachronistic turns of phrase. I'm not looking for Shakespearean dialogue (which wouldn't work either) but:
"You're not going anywhere" and "Go fuck yourself" felt rather jarring.

I'm enjoying it up to a point but suspect I might be a bit Tudored out by now.

BestIsWest · 14/09/2024 23:41

Thank you for new thread.
I have Craig Brown - A Voyage Around the Queen * on Audible (excellent reading by Harriet Walter) and The Burnout - Sophie Kinsella* on Kindle on the go. Both very enjoyable.

Thanks for the new thread, South. I'll hold off on my list for a bit, as I actually came on to add a review so don’t want to end up with a post even longer than mine usually are!*

68. The War Diaries - Nina Siegal

Weirdly, this was called The Diary Keepers when I first added it to my wishlist, but it seems to have changed title, which is a bit odd. Anyway, it’s very good, and was sparked off for me by spending some time in the Netherlands last year on a family history-related trip that involved quite a close encounter with evidence of the country’s (grim) wartime experiences.

Essentially, this book presents extracts from 9 Dutch wartime diaries - all part of a collection of thousands in the State Department for War Documentation. Nina Siegal's main focus is on Jewish experiences, although not all the diarists are Jewish, and two are Nazi sympathisers. That relatively small number of testimonies allows her to weave a tight and genuinely gripping timeline as the war progresses and the occupying Nazis tighten their grip remorselessly on the Jewish population of the Netherlands, who were murdered in vast numbers. The two Nazi-adjacent diarists (Dutch, but enthusiastic Hitler-worshippers) are quoted to devastating effect next to entries both from Jewish people facing a terrible fate, and others (including a hugely courageous middle-aged woman) who helped and sheltered them. By the end, you're reading heart-in-mouth to find out what happened to everyone and hoping against hope that all the 'good' diarists survived - incredibly, one was still alive when the book was written; a hale and hearty 105-year-old.

I've read many Mass Observation-type British books on the war but it was good to explore the experiences of another country - especially as a fair bit of the detail here intersects with the story told by Daniel Finkelstein in Hitler, Stalin, Mum and Dad - so may be of interest to anyone who read that as well.

*sorry - still too long…!

Tarahumara · 15/09/2024 07:50

Just place marking on the new thread. Thanks southeast!

Fishcake18 · 15/09/2024 07:53

Ooh want to join this thread.. have to go and write down/remember all the books I've read this year!

RomanMum · 15/09/2024 08:04

Hello Fishcake, welcome to one of the friendliest corners of Mumsnet. Thank you for the shiny new thread south.

I'm saving my list till the end of the year as always.

54.	Memphis - Tara M Stringfellow

A saga of Memphis life, following a Black family in episodes from the 1930s to 2000s, as narrated by its women over three generations. It’s a powerful story, violent and shocking in parts, showing how the past can shape families, particularly with the weight of expectation on the women over the generations. Funnily enough, though the setting is completely different it shares a theme with my last book, The Bookbinder of Jericho, that of a young woman trying to escape her family circumstances to find a better life. Not a book I would normally go for but a good choice.

55.	Soldier Sailor - Claire Kilroy

I’m probably the last on this thread to read this. After the last two plot-heavy books this was a complete change of pace. It brought back memories of the intensity of early motherhood where everything was a struggle. The friend was a mystery - I understand his purpose but he just disappeared towards the end. The ending was very affecting.

TattiePants · 15/09/2024 08:33

@Fishcake18 welcome to the thread - it really is the nicest part of MN but it’ll play havoc with your bank balance! Some of us bring across our reading list at the start of a new thread, others don’t bother. Going forward there are apps like Goodreads that are great for keeping track of what you’ve read and what you’d like to read.

Thanks for the new thread @Southeastdweller, I’ll bring my list over later today.
