What Salman Rushdie to read?

Is there a Salman Rushdie that is fairly accessible? A friend suggested to try him as I was moaning I hadn't read anything recently that was well written, if you see what I mean....

I find him impenetrable. I love Rohinton Mistry.

Haroun And The Sea Of Stories is lovely

poppyzbrite4 · 14/09/2024 00:14

I love Midnight's Children. He has also written some great short stories.

I second Midnight’s Children. His books are wonderful but quite unique - not everyone likes him!

This is genuinely enjoyable, it's mythical and allegorical. I've found the others I've read hard going, not read Midnight's Children.

I really enjoyed Shalimar the Clown - not only a lovely story but it taught me loads about the history of Kashmir

I actually just read Knife which is non fiction about his attack and it was really good and also made me want to read both his work and his wife's novel though also not sure what to pick up

Midnights chidren is one of my favourite books of all time. I even persuaded non reading for pleasure DH to have a go and he loved it too

iloveeverykindofcat · 16/09/2024 15:25

I think Midnight's Children is the best introduction to his work. It's extremely readable and compulsive. The Satanic Verses is possibly a better book, but a more demanding read I found.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 16/09/2024 15:26

As above, another vote for Midnights Children

NetballHoop · 16/09/2024 15:28

He writes beautifully. Others have mentioned Midnight's Children which is great. I also loved The Moor's Last Sigh and have recently finished Quichotte which might be a good one to start with.

For what it's worth, I thought The Satanic Verses was very clever and well written but I wouldn't put it my top 3 of his works.

The Ground Beneath Her Feet

TheBossOfMe · 16/09/2024 16:01

Definitely Midnight’s Children. It’s utterly beautiful and compelling.

ViciousCurrentBun · 16/09/2024 16:06

Haroun and the sea of stories is the most accessible but I did love Midnight's children and The Satanic Verses.

Maybe try some Virago modern classics.

LaLaLouella · 16/09/2024 16:08

Midnights Children - a beautiful novel

I found Fury quite accessible. Especially the opening chapters, and it is set in New York. It felt quite zeitgeist at the time (2001). His first American novel.

Sorry I know I’m late posting here but I’ve just read ‘The Enchantress of Florence’ and can’t praise it enough as I absolutely loved it! I’ve just bought Shalimar the Clown and I’m so looking forward to reading it!
