Currently:
I'm currently about half way through "Enter Ghost" by Isabella Hammad.

Feeling:
I've been working my way through the six books shortlisted for the Women's Prize and this is the last one. It's probably bottom of my list of those books. I haven't at all clicked with the characters and I'm finding it quite boring to be honest.

Next:
I've just had my next stack of four books delivered and I think I'll try George Orwell's "1984" next. I'm excited.

Perve even!!

I ended up thinking Mr Casaubon had a right to some annoyance. I'd be a bit miffed if my wife and my cousin clearly fancied each other.

No. Good concept poorly executed.

Agree with this about 'Butter'. And I got so annoyed with myself for allowing myself to be persuaded by the 'everyone's reading vibe' around it.

The TV Middlemarch with Rufus Sewell at his most delicious is great (whatever happened to Juliet Aubrey?)

She's in All Creatures Great and Small I think?

I have just finished 100 Years of Solitude fo book club. I felt like I was reading it for about 100 years. And I'm still not sure what it was all about!

TeabySea · 23/01/2026 10:42

I'm now reading The Cellar by Natasha Preston, (as a book group choice ). I'm not enjoying it at all. It's clichéd and in no way believable.

Hellohah · 23/01/2026 12:16

I am currently reading Circle of Days by Ken Follett.

The Pillars of the Earth is one of my favourite books and I enjoyed all in the Kingsbridge series and the Century Trilogy but this isn't good.

I'm about half way through and it just lacks the depth of his others I've read and I'm not getting it. It feels like a book just going through the motions and I probably won't read any more of his now.

The Safekeep by Yael Van Der Wouden has just come through on my BorrowBox so will read that next.

beguilingeyes · 23/01/2026 13:51

I've just started a Graham Norton called A Keeper. It's my second one of his and i'm very impressed so far. It reminds me a bit of Maeve Binchy.

Currently reading Book Lovers by Emily Henry.
Never heard of the book or the author but was given the book by a friend.
So far so good. A very light read which is what I need right now. Typical rom-com / chick-lit (hate that phrase!).

I've just finished The Book of Longings by Sue Monk Kidd which I really enjoyed.

Next I'm going to reread (for the umpteenth time) Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, before starting Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConaghy.

I bought The Book of Longings a couple of weeks ago from The Word in the Water bookshop (for those who don’t know, it’s a bookshop on a canal barge in London). Glad to hear you enjoyed it!

I have more than one book on the go, which is unusual for me. The Greatest Story ever Told, by Bear Grylls, which is (so far, anyway) the life of Jesus told from different viewpoints. I started this before Christmas, then decided to read something else and return to it.

During my Christmas break I then started Two Lives by Vikram Seth, but had to put that aside to read my book club book, Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz. It’s a murder mystery within a murder mystery - I enjoyed it but I found I preferred the Agatha Christie-style plot to the modern-day chapters.

I am about to return to Two Lives; it’s a long book which I’d hoped to finish before I returned to work in January.

I have just finished 100 Years of Solitude fo book club. I felt like I was reading it for about 100 years. And I'm still not sure what it was all about!

I was about to wax lyrical about that book but then realised I was thinking about 'Love in the Time of Cholera' by the same author. I do like Garcia Marquez's work but I think you have to be in the right time and place for it. Being obliged to for a book club is not the right time and place. Mind you, that probably holds true for so many books.

It's why I can't be a member of a book club. I love to talk about books, but only the ones I want to read.

pippistrelle · 25/01/2026 13:12

I've just finished 'No One is Talking About This' by Patricia Lockwood which was Booker shortlisted a few years ago but that I didn't read at the time. It's a stream of conscious sort of thing about an influencer and the inconsequential things that appear to make up our lives. But then something very consequential happens in her life. It was a touching, but not maudlin, read.

Now reading a throwaway sort of thriller, 'A Neighbour's Guide to Murder' by Louise Candlish, which is great fun, and I really want to find out what happens next. Also contemplating what my next classic will be.

"The Greatest Story ever Told, by Bear Grylls,"

There's something about that as a concept that just makes me boggle. Is it actually any good @LifeOfBriony?

It is good, it’s thought-provoking. I’ve read two of the accounts, then I stopped to read something else. I decided I didn’t want to read it all in one go as I know what happens (at least I think I do!) and I felt that I would think and reflect more if I didn’t plough ahead as if I was reading a novel. So I read one account before Christmas, one just after, and will pace myself to read the last one as we approach Easter. That’s the plan anyway.

beguilingeyes · 26/01/2026 07:56

Has anyone else read Judith Michael? I loved a book of hers called Deceptions which was about identical twin sisters who swapped lives for a while.
I've just started one of hers called A Certain Smile.

HelenaWilson · 28/01/2026 19:54

Reading Dark Horse, the latest Felix Francis. I'd gone off Felix, and haven't read all of his most recent books, but the blurb said this one features Sid Halley, so I thought I'd give it a go.

Just started Chapter 10. No sign of Sid yet and the plot so far isn't about horseracing, the characters just happen to be jockeys.

Up next will be A Tale of Two Cities for the discussion here on MN.

Hadn’t heard of this author recently, until recently watched ‘People we met on vacation ’ film. Based on one of her books. An easy to watch film, although I thought the title wasn’t the best name for the film.

loveawineloveacrisp · 28/01/2026 21:34

Emily Henry is great, read most of her books.

Currently reading a Coleen Hoover as I wanted something easy but wonder every time i read one why I subject my brain to them. Very formulaic.

Need something a bit more highbrow next.

I really love Dick Francis's books, I'm currently re-reading loads. I can't get on with Felix's stuff at all. A pale imitation.

pippistrelle · 29/01/2026 14:31

Just finished 'Heads Will Roll' by Josh Winning. A new genre for me - slasher horror! It wasn't terrible. Nicely written, characters drawn pretty well, but still completely ludicrous.

Now on to William Faulkner's 'As I Lay Dying'. I have read it before but when I was 17 in my first year of university. I didn't really get it then but I feel like it might deserve a more... mature reader. Also 'Workhouse' by Caroline Palmer which is The Devil Wears Prada but darker. It's wryly funny too.

Yes, this one was a big disappointment. Won't say more because of spoilers, but to anyone hoping for a typical Sid Halley thriller with a plot involving race fixing or whatever, I'd say don't waste your time. I had it from the library as an e-book, so at least it didn't cost me money.

Eastie77Returns · 31/01/2026 22:00

Currently reading North Woods. Struggled a bit with the first couple of chapters but now halfway through and really enjoying it. I’ve got about a dozen books lined up once I’ve finished. Think I’ll read The Secret History by Donna Tartt next. I actually read it many years ago when I was still at university and remember I absolutely loved it but can’t fully recall the plot so will revisit.

It's like Lee Child letting his brother take over the Reacher books. What was he thinking? The new ones are like a bad tribute act.

@Eastie77Returns
I too loved North Woods.
Have you read The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt? My favourite of hers.
