Currently:
I'm currently about half way through "Enter Ghost" by Isabella Hammad.

Feeling:
I've been working my way through the six books shortlisted for the Women's Prize and this is the last one. It's probably bottom of my list of those books. I haven't at all clicked with the characters and I'm finding it quite boring to be honest.

Next:
I've just had my next stack of four books delivered and I think I'll try George Orwell's "1984" next. I'm excited.

Currently: Water by John Boynes
Feeling: it’s already too short! Trying to restrict how much I read in a chunk as it’s very short but I’m loving it and don’t want to rush through it
Next: David Copperfield having read Demon Copperhead recently

WhisperTree · 27/11/2024 11:02

Just finished re-reading Iris Murdoch's The Unicorn.

It hits differently when you're not in your twenties. I loved the blend of types of storytelling, and the commitment to neatly tying up all the plot strands. Murdoch firmly comes down in favour of a particular approach to life, at least within the story. It's a generous book.

My next stop, as I hunt for the toughest British & Irish women novelists of midcentury-present, is AS Byatt's Possession.

I loved Water as well and agree it's far too short. I could have read much more of it and felt very involved in the characters by the end.

Finished Any Human Heart a couple of days ago )I really am a slow reader). I actually sobbed a little after I finished 🙃

Just started reading Orbital, it's so short even I should finish it soon. It was sent to me from my book subscription. I'm finding it very engaging so far.

Eastie77Returns · 21/12/2024 00:12

Just finished Booth by Karen Joy Fowler. Superb and loved it from start to finish. I do think you need more than a passing interest in US political history to enjoy it.

Currently reading The Fraud by Zadie Smith. For reasons I can’t quite explain I’ve never been a fan of her work but this a good read. It’s not going to be up there in my list of favourites but it’s very well written and a very original story.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 21/12/2024 11:41

@Eastie77Returns
I also really enjoyed Booth

beguilingeyes · 21/12/2024 18:11

I'm reading The Ink Black Heart. Coincidentally as the TV adaptation has just started. I'm enjoying it very much.
Not sure what's next. I just picked up a Graham Norton from the Little Green Library. Would anyone recommend him?

123teenagerfood · 21/12/2024 22:19

I'm currently reading A Court of Wings and Ruin, my friend gave me the series so far, and to be honest I was a bit meh about them, however I can't put them down, I need to know what happens to Feyre! Not my usual genre, but I am enjoying them.

highlandcoo · 22/12/2024 00:33

@beguilingeyes I've read Home Stretch and Forever Home by Graham Norton. Both were fine - not outstanding, but fine.

I did really enjoy Holding, the TV adaptation of his first novel. Still available on ITVX I think, and well worth a watch.

EmpressaurusDeiGatti · 22/12/2024 08:35

I found half a shelf of Kinsey Millhone books by Sue Grafton in one of the local charity shops, so that’s my Christmas reading.

thisoldcity · 22/12/2024 11:37

I'm reading Our Evenings by Alan Hollinghurst. It's not been out long (friend lent me his copy) and I'm really enjoying it. His writing is so good, I actually slow down my reading to take it in properly and I don't do that with many writers. I think he is a writer who has got better over the years.

I am having a binge read of Jussi Adler Olsen Q detective books. On Audible I am listening to Richard Osman's We Solve Murders and being driven mad by Nicola Walker talking about driving on the A31 as the A three one instead of A thirty-one. Surely that is the most basic of errors? (I did spend 25 years driving up and down it).

What’s We Solve Murders like?

Nit great IMO. Silly. Twee.

I still have four hours to go, but it all feels a bit laboured. Steve the Private Detective character is dull and wouldn't make it into The Thursday Murder Club. There are a few good laugh out loud moments. The women characters are more interesting, but I am fairly new to Audible and realise that I normally read fast and skip the boring bits. I might like it better if I did. 😂

Bliss. I love those. Such a shame she died before she got to Z.

Wasn’t it! Kinsey’s one of my favourite detectives.

Thanks @EineReiseDurchDieZeit & @HilaryThorpe, that’s saved me buying it!

IceIceBabyBump · 22/12/2024 13:26

Currently: The Woman Who Walked Into Doora by Roddy Doyle.

Feeling: I'm enjoying it. His writing drags at times but it's hooked me in. I feel he could've done more to build the violence, it just sort of started happening one day all at once which has fostered a bit of weird feeling towards the main character. I can't explain it.

Next: Paula Spence by Roddy Doyle, the second book in the series.

Currently reading A God in Ruins (Kate Atkinson) which took me a minute to get into but the final 2/3 have had me hooked. I really want to fit in one more book this year but also have to prep a book for work so I might end up choosing something short on my tbr pile - maybe Never Let Me Go?

DNF. Wasn't interested in characters or plot.

Eastie77Returns · 24/12/2024 12:05

Really struggling with The Fraud (Zadie Smith) but I’m going to persevere. In theory it’s the kind of book I’d really enjoy as I like stories set in the past but this is just not landing with me. A shame as all the reviews were very positive but in truth I’ve never really rated her so I don’t know why I thought I’d enjoy this.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 24/12/2024 12:14

Currently reading Long Island by Colm Toibin after really enjoying Brooklyn, it's predecessor

HarpyBirthday · 24/12/2024 12:20

Razor Girl by Carl Hiaason . Enjoyable crime caper romp with lots of ott characters.

Next - probably Romantic Comedy by Curtis Sittenfield.
