I love reading and enjoy a wide range of books. I listen to audio books sometimes but the last 2 bought i have had to buy to read as i could concentrate listening . Very descriptive books or those with multiple characters i need to actually physically read. It's much more pleasurable and absorbing. I enjoy psychological Lisa Jewell/similar writers on audio but thet need to have fewer characters. Any suggestions. Tia.

I haven't 'read' these on audio but the best crime fiction I have read recently is M.W. Craven's Washington Poe series. Audible reviews of the narration are really positive. The first in the series is The Puppet Show. Warning - there's a really graphic violent opening and this is the most disturbing in the entire series (apparently, the original opening was initially character exposition) but he was advised by the editor to just open with the murder. Poe and his side kick Tilly are brilliant characters and there is a lot of humour to off set the darkness. It's what Craven does really well.

The Puppet Show

I've enjoyed Graham Norton's books on Audible and also Stacey Halls' books.

Like you, I find it slightly easier to keep track of a smaller character list.

My DH has raced through all the Cormoran Strike books, John Boyne and Lisa Jewell. He's just finished Magpie by Elizabeth Day and said it was gripping.

I have a real soft spot for the "Aisling" series by Emer McLysaght and Sarah Breen - love the pace and chatty nature of the stories and feel like Aisling is someone I can relate to.

I loved listening to ‘Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine’ and ‘The Rosie Project’ on Audible. Not too teeming with people, and I completely bought into the narrators’ embodiment of the main characters.

I'm currently listening to JoJo Moyes Someone else's shoes which so far is very enjoyable as an audible

I tried 4 Kate Atkinson novels and none worked for me which was annoying. I gave them a good go

Yes these worked well for me as audible too. Really enjoyed them

Try non-fiction - no plot to keep track of! I enjoy listening to autobiographies (especially when read by the author).

Non fiction audiobooks are great. I’m listening to Barak Obama read his memoirs (free on Borrowbook app via my local library) and it’s wonderful.

Light comedy is good too, like the Jeeves and Wooster books.

Similar to Lisa Jewell:

Louise Candlish
Sabine Durrant
TM Logan

I've listened to these authors on audiobooks and some of the narrator's are excellent

On your advice, I have just started Lucky Man, written and narrated by Michael J Fox.

I'll take a look, thanks. Think I've read a Louise Cavendish but nothing by the other authors.

Excellent choice!

Quite a lot of the time I choose audiobooks based on who I’d like to listen to - I listened to a whole series of mediocre crime novels because I loved the narrator’s voice.

Haveanaiceday · 02/08/2024 23:36

The thing with fiction audio books is that they will do different voices for the characters and this can be good or annoying depending on the reader.

Snowfalling · 02/08/2024 23:39

Very old but I've started listening to PG WODEHOUSE read by Jonathan Cecil. I used to love reading them but the audiobooks are something else, just a total joy.

Crispynoodle · 03/08/2024 00:28

I loved Lucinda Riley's Seven Sisters books on audio she wrote very detailed descriptions of different countries

This series are among my very favourite books ever. I read them all then listened to them on audio before Atlas was published. They are wonderful, sweeping novels.
