Romantic fiction that isn't twee or cheesy?

About to go on holiday and would like something light to read around the pool.

The last romantic fiction type book I read was about 15 years ago - p.s I love you by Celia Aherne. Hated it! I just thought it was really cliched and predictable.

Can anyone recommend anything that they've enjoyed? I love bridgerton on Netflix so if all else fails I'll get a couple of those!

I liked I Love You I Love You I Love You and Really Good, Actually

I recently read A Novel Love Story - Ashley Poston
Slow Dance - Rainbow Rowell
I Love You, I Love You, I Love You - Laura Dockrill

I’d recommend all three!

I love a bit of Georgette Heyer but I found myself rather gripped by A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah Maas. Great literature it ain't but it was fab to have that feeling of getting swept up in a story where I wanted to find out when (not if) they'd fall into bed together.

It's not too bad on the cheese stakes as it's based on the ballad of Tam Lin. But it is heavy on the faerie fantasy tropes.

If you prefer your romance with more literary merit (and no faerie bonkage in the bosky glades), I can recommend Fire and Hemlock by Diana Wynne Jones - a comfort read for me.

If you like ACOTAR, you will love the Throne of Glass series by the same author. Read Assassin’s Blade first, though.

I’m onto mafia romances at the moment but they are utter trash and I’m too embarrassed to recommend any. I devour them!

Thank you to whoever recommended Outlander - I can't put it down!!!
(Despite having 3 cases to unpack and lots of washing to do!) I plan to work through some of the others when I've finished it

100% Georgette Heyer: The Grand Sophy, Sylvester or Arabella are my favourites but there are others that are good (plus some weaker ones).
I also second Mary Stewart - and the Cazalet Chrinicles (Elizabeth Jane Howard) which someone mentioned earlier are a great comfort read (less romance). So much happy reading time ahead!

If you love Outlander, then you will have enough to keep you going for quite a while!! I love it too and have the books synched with audible as well. The books are so long and the audible narration so good, it's great to be able to switch between the two and just listen on car journeys.

I also love Georgette Heyer. I must have read every single book at least 3 times. A Civil Contract is one of my favourites. It's slightly different from many others.

Have you read any Daphne du Maurier? Part mystery, part romance but very entertaining and readable.

MissAtomicBomb1 · 15/08/2024 15:49

Yes you're right, I don't think I can just read the first book. I'll probably end up falling down an outlander rabbit hole!
Have you watched the TV series?

Haven't read any Georgette Heyer yet but her name keeps cropping up on here so I really must!

Carol Mason, Second Chance Romance. Funny and sweet.

I enjoyed the Seven Sisters series by Lucinder Riley.
