Hello I'm off to France (Normandy) soon can any one suggest books about/written in France to get me in the mood? Or films? Have read 5 years in Provence. Many thanks.

Have you read all of the The Provence Series by Peter Mayle?

Probably not what you want but I really enjoyed The Braid by French author Laetitia Colombani, but it's not set in France but in India, Sicily and Canada. Also went down well with everyone at my book club.

Loved The Diving Bell and the Butterfly by Jean-Dominique Bauby but it's a sad true story and not a holiday read.

Madame Bovary. Candide. Bonjour Tristesse. Gigi. The Years. Lullaby. The Godmother.

There's so much good French literature translated into English it would be a shame to read an English novel in France.

A couple of film suggestions:

Les Demoiselles de Rochefort - lovely, upbeat, colourful musical set in a French seaside town, with a young Catherine Deneuve and her real-life sister.

Pauline at the Beach - more seaside fun.

Tous les Matins du Monde - not a laugh a minute but very beautiful, with a gorgeous soundtrack.

Jean de Florette and Manon Des Sources. But they are based in the South of France so very different landscapes.

A Good Year with Russell Crowe is a fabulous film! Based on one of Mayle’s books.

M. Hulot's Holiday always gets me in the mood for a trip to northern France.

Fred Vargas, not altogether serious crime with an enigmatic police inspector hero. I think This Night's Foul Work is set in Normandy. It's a book btw

Merci! Thanks all
