Fancy trying out Terry Pratchett books, appreciate any advice on which book to read first because there seems to be a lot.

I read Reaper Man first. Picked it up at the library, got home, decided to read first chapter but couldn't put it down so finished it there and then (ahhh the days of no children eh?). I was great, don't think I missed much from not reading one of the others before it.

Wyrd sisters is great too. Really enjoyable. I don't like the guards guards, dwarfy ones though.

Death and Granny Weatherwax (a witch)are the best characters IMO - very handy as death always talks in CAPITALS so I just skim through the book and see how much is there in caps, if there's lots I take it home.

It was great, I wasn't. I must preview before posting

Colour of Magic I found seemed to take off various sci-fi / fantasy books like Anne McCaffrey so maybe start with her Dragonquest? Then later books take off Shakespeare, history etc. and become more accessible.

I'm reading Fifth Elephant at the moment, having a bit of a Vimes thing going on!

THe best thing is that you can re-read them and get something new each time.

Lucky you, though, you have the whole of Discworld before you!!

Frizbe · 12/04/2008 10:57

Ohhh Pyramids, you've reminded me of that Camel, 'you bastard'

SallyInYorkshire · 12/04/2008 11:06

I didnt think colour of magic was that funny when i read it as a teenager..... then a nerdy boyfriend explained to me that it only really makes sense if you are into roleplaying games (no not THAT sort... but the sort which nerdy teenage boys do, involving rolling 10-sided dice a lot).

Blandmum · 12/04/2008 11:08

Sorry that you failed with them Cali.

Soul Music is v good. but my all time faves are the ones involving the guards.

Guards, guards is my all time fave.

have you tried listening to them in the car? (you can download them on Audible unabridged)

SquonkTheBeerGuru · 12/04/2008 11:12

I like the witch ones: Equal Rites, Wyrd Sisters etc.

I think a good one to start would be Mort.

I heart TP

RustyBear · 12/04/2008 11:28

I like Pyramids as well - it has my all-time favourite Pratchett name (and there's a lot of competition) the handmaiden Ptraci.

Graciefer · 12/04/2008 12:03

Another house full of TP fans here, the watch are definately my favourites, although DH likes Rincewind.

It seems like we have been waiting forever for 'Making Money' to come out on paperback and we still have 3 more months to wait

Like others have said, you don't have to read them in order of when they were published, infact there are several websites out there that recommend different orders to read the books to understand the characters best.

Hope you get as much pleasure from the discworld as I have.

I do love the witches. And Captain Vimes. I'd vote for a world run by a triumvirate of the Patrician, Vimes and Granny Weatherwax.

Remember the way the Patrician treats mime artists? Thrown into a deep pit with a sign saying 'LEARN THE WORDS' on the wall.

Fullmoonfiend · 12/04/2008 12:17

they are the only books dh and I have in common! Adore anything with the witches in, though I have an uncomfortable feeling he based magrat on me [wet hen]

My favourite ever is Lords and ladies.

And now ds1 (10) is becoming addicted too.

His We Free Men series is also fantastic.

He writes so many fabulous lines...sigh.

NotDoingTheHousework: SNAP on Good Omens

SparklyPrincess · 13/04/2008 21:41

Another Terry fan here ...

I'm agreeing that Guards Guards or Wyrd Sisters would be a good place to start - they lead into 'sub-series'. Pyramids is a great standalone. That's where I started many years ago.

Must admit I've lost track at the moment, my books have been in the loft for a couple of years and have only just seen the light of day. Think I'm up to date though - is Going Postal the latest paperback??

Hope you enjoy the books ... should keep you going for a while!

SP

P.S. Pooter - have you seen the meetup thread for next week? Would be great to meet you in RL!

havalina · 14/04/2008 09:23

I love Good Omens so much, makes me lol, so clever and so many good lines, probably my favourite book ever. I've read a couple of discworld, must make more of an effort.
