I’m always looking for something like Heller, Vonnegut, Wodehouse- but more modern. Anyone got recommendations?

Jasper Fforde The Eyre Affair and sequels although I think the first book is the best. I'd describe them as absurdist romps. Jonathan Coe writes tragicomic satires on British life/politics (I've only read What a Carve up so not sure about the rest of his books)

Try A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole.

Ben Elton - Stark

A Good Man in Africa by William Boyd.
Not that modern - was written in 1981, and set in the late 60s, it is dated in places, but is a good romp.

Christopher Brookmyre

Jonathan Coe is v good

Thirding Jonathan Coe - Middle England is brilliant. It's the third in a series (the Rotters' Club is another, can't remember the third title) but can easily be read as a standalone novel.

I was going to recommend Evelyn Waugh’s Scoop, but just saw that you’re looking for something modern.

Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy. Too obvious?

Me too - I think there's a bit of a gap there. Have you tried Magnus Mills? DBC Pierre?

DisplayPurposesOnly · 07/07/2024 14:35

Keith Waterhouse - Office Life

It's also not that modern but Lucky Jim by Kingsley Amis is a howl.

Terry pratchet?

Not modern but very funny: Tom Sharpe

Thanks everyone! There really is a gap, isn’t there!

I love Douglas Adams. Great choice.

John Niven writes great satire - The Second Coming (where Jesus gets sent back to earth and ends up on American Idol) is especially good and he also wrote a heist caper called The Sunshine Cruise Company which is laugh-out-loud funny. Both are pretty sweary/rude though so if you're not a fan of that then best avoid. Another favourite is Florence Of Arabia by Christopher Buckley - really sharp and clever and very funny too, especially if you've ever spent any time in the Middle East. I also second the recommendation for What A Carve Up by Jonathan Coe although I think that's a bit older.

I read City of Mann which was released only this year I think. It reads like it was written long before its time and is a lovely and really thoughtful read.
