He’s grumbling that everything around is dark or too gloomy.

he liked Gerald Durrell, all creatures great and small, Richard Osman…

he does read and loved Hilary Mantel, Kazuo Ishiguro etc, but wants something lighter…

any recommendations?

Definitely Bill Bryson's books, if he hasn't read them already.
I would start with Notes from a Small Island.

LemonSoup · 30/06/2024 12:12

Second Diary of a Nobody and add the Eliza Stories by Barry Pain!

Mothership4two · 30/06/2024 12:19

Came on to say PG Wodehouse. Bill Bryson and Douglas Adams are good shouts too.

Cold Comfort Farm? DH enjoyed it.

TwigTheWonderKid · 30/06/2024 12:21

If he wants something contemporary The Satsuma Complex by Bob Mortimer is quirky and charming.

Cocolapew · 30/06/2024 12:22

David Thorne

GreenPeasandMint · 30/06/2024 12:27

Was about to suggest Tom Sharpe

leeverarch · 30/06/2024 12:36

I would say Bill Bryson but folks have beaten me to it!

BigDahliaFan · 30/06/2024 12:56

He’s read Douglas adams, Tom shape, terry pratchet, so you are all pretty much spot on!

MILTOBE · 30/06/2024 12:57

Has he read any Nick Hornby?

BeachRide · 30/06/2024 13:14

Bill Bryson - Notes from a Small Island and A Walk in the Woods to start. He'll love them!

Shittification · 30/06/2024 13:26

Carl Hiaasen. A bit dark but very, very funny.

SilverBranchGoldenPears · 30/06/2024 13:28

My immediate response would be Bill Bryson. Laugh out loud funny!

BlackCatsAreBrilliant · 30/06/2024 13:31

I enjoyed the How To Be Dead series by Dave Turner. It's quite light for a book about the Grim Reaper and his sidekicks.

BIWI · 30/06/2024 13:32

The Slough House series by Mick Herron.

ArabellaFishwife · 30/06/2024 21:46

John O'Farrell, maybe?

Tarantella6 · 30/06/2024 21:48

Magnus Mills 😊

TellySavalashairbrush · 30/06/2024 22:01

The no1 ladies detective agency series by Alexander McCall Smith. Humour and gentleness.

NannyGythaOgg · 30/06/2024 22:27

Jodie Foster, St Mary's Chronicles. If he likes Pratchett, has he read The Science of the Discworld books? We (The Roundworld) are basically an experiment/research

LightSpeeds · 30/06/2024 22:32

The Ascent of Rum Doodle by W. E. Bowman. One of the funniest books I've ever read (with an introduction by Bill Bryson).
