I'm reading this now but haven't finished it.
Anyone else reading it or has finished it ?

I’ve just finished it. I liked it until a couple of chapters before the end. For me it was a slow start but then I got really engrossed in it, then slightly annoyed at the end but had to finish it.
What do you think so far?

deeahgwitch · 29/06/2024 18:04

It's not "grabbing" me.
I have been reading it over a few weeks and had to go back a few times to check things as I had forgotten parts.

It was an interesting plot but I disliked the ending.
I know they weren't related but urgh !
It's not a book I would recommend.

What was the point of the vision in the castle ?
Would you really go off camping and actually sharing a tent with people you'd never met before with whom you were going to be a surrogate for their baby ?
Most odd.
Being set in the future wasn't necessary either.

I liked it until the ending which I thought was awful

Likesomemorecash · 05/07/2024 22:09

It's probably my least favourite of his novels. He does better with history rather than the future imvho.

pollyhemlock · 11/07/2024 21:39

Just finished this . It’s readable enough but I didn’t much like it. I found it unconvincing; the characters’ motivations and behaviour often seemed quite odd. Also (spoiler alert) Talissa’s sudden passion for Seth at the end really didn’t work and felt , to be honest, quite icky.

HMTheQueenMuffin · 18/08/2024 06:16

Just finished it. I thought the premise was interesting. The writing was not particularly challenging and felt rushed and like he was just phoning it in and the ending was just ... eeeeeeewwwwwwww. Revolting. It ruined completely whatever positive feelings i had.

I have no idea why he’s so popular as a writer, I read The girl at the Lion D’ior for book club once and gave it one star, really sexist and creepy.

And before that I tried to read Human Traces but gave up after some ridiculous section where a character learned fluent French overnight on a whim and it irritated me so much I gave up.

HMTheQueenMuffin · 18/08/2024 06:35

I should have known better tbh.I've never really liked him but it got rave reviews from someone and piqued my interest.

But yes it ended up being creepy as fuck.

VictoryOrDeath · 18/08/2024 07:51

I didn't like this either - not particularly well written, then it just turned into a weird male fantasy at the end.

User050105 · 24/08/2024 09:19

I didn't enjoy this at all. @VictoryOrDeath got it right describing it as a weird male fantasy at the end. Creepy and weird.

I've never enjoyed his books as much as I feel I should have done.

Flatandhappy · 24/08/2024 09:59

I quite enjoyed it but IMO nothing he has ever written since has been as good as “Birdsong”.

TitusMoan · 24/08/2024 12:07

All of his stuff is creepy weird male fantasy now. There’s a certain type of male writer who shouldn’t actually write anything after about 50. Julian Barnes, looking at you too.

SomeSuchThing · 24/08/2024 12:19

I actually quite liked it - the implications of the science and how different people in different parts of the world may think differently to each other without realizing it. Have always liked him as an author and the way he takes on challenging ideas in fiction. This one was reminiscent of Human Traces for me, just looking forward rather than back. Not a great novel perhaps, but thought provoking - I'm glad I read it.
