Hi everyone,

What have you been reading? Have you been enjoying something? Trying out something new? What are you reading at the moment?

As for me, I'm reading Sea of Tranquily by Emily St. John Mandel. It's a mish-mash between sci-fi and some sort of mysterious novel. However it's easy to read yet has some depth -- it's much easier to read than Station 11.

Here's hoping we get some sun in months to come 💫

I’m finishing a complete read-through of Antonia Forest, as still unpacking books from our last house move — only The Players and the Rebels left. (Though I couldn’t find The Thuggery Affair…)

Min133 · 19/06/2024 22:09

Ooo I enjoyed the Sea of Tranquility. I'm currently reading The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood and my non fiction read is The Wild Places by Robert MacFarlane

Cooper77 · 19/06/2024 23:08

I have just ‘discovered’ Douglas Adams. (He’d always been on my to-read list as I’d heard him described as a mix of Kurt Vonnegut and P. G. Wodehouse, two of my favourite writers.) Anyway, I went to Heffers bookshop in Cambridge and bought a pile of his books. My plan is to spend the summer working my way through. So far it has been bliss. Imagine if P. G. Wodehouse had done a PhD in physics and decided to write science fiction instead. Adams is now in my personal canon, along with Wodehouse, Patrick Fermor, Evelyn Waugh, Anita Brookner and Aldous Huxley. Can’t recommend him highly enough.

I'm currently reading The Housemaid by Freida McFadden, I've recently got into thrillers and everyone seems to rave about this book, about half way through and its ok but nothing special very over hyped in my opinion.

PeachPairPlum · 20/06/2024 10:08

Fleishman is in Trouble by Taffy Akner-Brodesser (probably spelt wrong).

Very good. I've already watched the TV series, but still well worth a read.

virginqueen · 20/06/2024 10:43

I'm reading Lady Macbethad by Isabelle Schuler. It's the story of Lady Macbeth from childhood. Right up my street, although the names are a bit of a challenge !

InnerPlop · 20/06/2024 11:24

I'm currently read Herc by Phoenicia Rogerson. I really enjoyed the first half, but finding this last bit a bit of a slog to be honest.
My next book to read is Hamnet by Maggie O'Farrell. I am really excited to read it and hope it doesn't disappoint!

SpeculatingRooks · 20/06/2024 11:31

After seeing it mentioned many times on here, I finally read My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante and absolutely loved it. I am now reading book number 2 of the series, Story of a New Name, and loving it even more!
I got all 4 novels for free on Borrow Box so that's a bonus!

EasternStandard · 20/06/2024 11:34

Not far into A Single Thread by Tracy Chevalier.

I was going to read it tonight but I've got a horrible headache so won't

MotherOfCatBoy · 22/06/2024 19:01

Just finished Hotel du Lac, enjoyed it although I wasn’t sure I would. Contemplating The Go Between next. Need short fiction to fit in between longer non fiction reads.

A Month in the Country or The Shooting Party are a lot shorter than The Go Between and roughly the same period.

MotherOfCatBoy · 22/06/2024 21:20

I read A Month in the Country last summer @MrsDanversGlidesAgain and absolutely loved it. Deeply drawn in. Haven’t heard of The Shooting Party, I’ll have a look, thank you!

OttersAreMySpiritAnimal · 22/06/2024 21:48

How not to diet, Michael Greger MD. A lot of facts to chew on so reading in bite sized chunks.

Winter Lost, Patricia Briggs. Mercy Thompson book 14. Absolutely love this series.

Book Lovers, Emily Henry. Slightly bored and over halfway through so might bin it off if nothing happens soon.

Tiddlywinkly · 23/06/2024 12:53

My tastes are a bit all over the place. I'm finishing the non-fiction book The Bookshop Woman by Nanako Canada, before starting All Fours by Miranda July. After that, I've got Brotherless Night by V.V. Ganeshananathan, The Glutton by A.K. Blakemore, Rebel Girl by Kathleen Hanna and Bad Summer People by Emma Rosenblum.

3kidsaremorethanenough · 23/06/2024 12:56

Half way through The Crimson Petal and the white, really enjoying it and have Veronica Decides to die for after. Must look through the rest of your reads on this thread for some inspiration for when I'm going on hols

A Month in the Country is a perfect novel. And sparked off my longrunning fascination with medieval wall paintings in churches.

@Lovewine1975
frieda got me out of a reading slump so I'm grateful to her for that. Her and Lisa Jewell

im reading sweet bean paste by Durian someone - can't remember the surname sorry! A character driven lovely little book which I'm sure was recommended on here.

@Tisfortired my favourite colm novel is blackwater lightship 😀

MamaGarl85 · 25/06/2024 08:23

Just finished Son of a witch by Gregory Maguire...the 2nd one in the "Wicked" series.

Strangely I enjoyed it more than the first one!

I will give it a go! I have only read Mothers and Sons by Colm previously but will definitely be reading more of his 😊

I have also just finished The Moustache by Emmanuel Carrere, not exactly a lighthearted summer read though!
