Thriller recommendation for unwell teen

I am a support worker for a teenage girl who is very unwell. She is currently in hospital. She has asked for books and loves thrillers. I am trying to find books suitable. She has been through the most trauma I have ever worked with. These books often trigger her so I have bought others more suitable but she doesn’t like them.
my teen used to love Jaqueline Wilson but these just contain to many subjects she needs to avoid.
I have been to every charity shop today and I can’t find anything!
does anyone have any recommendations of thrillers that avoid triggering subjects!

I feel like it’s a contradiction in terms to be honest!

Avoiding triggering subjects is really tricky, because everyone's are different. But some classic thrillers are Erskine Childers, the Riddle of the Sands. John Buchan, the 39 Steps, Geoffrey Household, Rogue Male.

They are all published pre 1939 and I can't remember any of them having any sexual content or graphic violence - though there are fights and deaths. They might be too old fashioned but between them they do introduce many of the common tropes that modern thrillers use, so they might be of interest in that respect, if nothing else.

In a similar vein to @GreenSmithing suggestions Agatha Christie books might be quite entertaining for a teen with the added fun of trying to guess who done it. Do check the synopsis though in case the themes are triggering.

How about spy type thrillers that are all about dirty dealings and politics rather than terrible things happening to people?

narniabusiness · 07/06/2024 19:59

Alistair McClean Ice Station Zebra is another oldie which might be good.
or Alex Rider books which are aimed at teens

Good idea @DoubIeLeopardy. I'm sure there are loads that would fit into that category.

A Gentleman in Moscow?

We really need to know what her triggers are to make recommendations. Sexual violence, domestic violence or something different again?

I’m a big fan of thrillers and lots would be suitable for an older teen but need to know what to avoid to give suggestions.

Would she want period thrillers for example Agatha Christie, Dorothy L Sayers, Marjorie Allingham, Patricia Highsmith?

Or something a bit more recent but still relatively run of the mill like PD James, Elizabeth George, Sara Paretsky or Sue Grafton?

Or really modern stuff which might have much harder themes? Lisa Jewell, Tess Geritsen, Gillian Flynn, Harlan Coben

What about people like John Grisham, James Patterson or Jeffrey Deaver?

What about old school point horror books? (if you can get hold of any)

Pigeonqueen · 07/06/2024 20:15

How about something a bit different like the Sarah J Maas Court series? They’re more young adult so depends on her age but they’re engaging and entertaining, thriller ish in places, there’s some mild sexy stuff but nothing outrageous.

The one of us is lying series is quite good too. Can’t remember who wrote it but it’s on Netflix as a series and the books will come up on Amazon if you type that in.

Also consider things like the Gone series, Hunger Games etc. Like others say though depends on what she might find upsetting.

This is brilliant thanks.
i did wonder about Agatha Christie so I might try one of those.
i did buy a hunger games which I am still toying with on that one. Alex Rider is another good idea!

I’m trying to avoid any subjects with any sex/sexual violence, anything with abuse and stories with birth or babies.
She’s fourteen and very bright so wants to fit in with what other teenagers read but it’s so hard to find suitable content.

Point horror is a great idea, I’d been thinking of getting a few of those myself so I’m going to look for them,
