D-day novel?

Can anyone recommend a good fictional account of the D-day landings? I would like to get a better idea from the 'inside', as it were.

Not a novel, but have you read "The Longest Day" by Cornelius Ryan. That's about as 'inside' as you could hope for. The author had access to thousands of witnesses accounts.

Thanks. I'll look that up.

Also not a novel, but James Holland’s Normandy 44 is excellent

Thanks so much. Another for the list.

Ian McEwan’s Atonement has the middle (partly imaginary) section set in the losing part of WW2 and the desperate shambles of the evacuation IIRC.

Isn't that the Dunkirk evacuation rather than D-day?

Stephen Ambrose D-Day. He also wrote Band of Brothers. (Non fiction).

Thanks for that! My history’s a bit shaky in general…

Yes these and also his Pegasus Bridge about the British airborne glider operation.

The Longest Day is probably the best though. Quite thrilling imo. The film is also great.

I’m currently rewatching Band of Brothers so was going to recommend this. Again, it’s non-fiction but D-Day: Minute by Minute by Jonathan May.

It's a fantastic book. The film adaptation is also currently on BBC iplayer.
