how do you feel about her books?

have read a few, but they are all quite repetitive in theme, havne't read one for years and years

TotalChaos · 05/04/2008 21:36

read a few, they were OK, sort of superior chick lit.

NaughtyNigel · 05/04/2008 22:03

yup. chick lit but somewhat enjoyable in a repetative sort of way.
good but i don't have to concentrate too much.

I read one of hers. Hated it. Won't be doing it again.

Panino · 05/04/2008 22:10

Read "The Pilot's Wife", on terra firma, and found it to be fairly usual, a bit week in characterisation, plot a bit left-field. Not too impressed.

why??

chipmonkey · 05/04/2008 22:18

Waswondering, I read "Light on Snow" , the one about the abandoned baby, just after having ds3 in hospital!

chipmonkey · 05/04/2008 22:20

To answer the OP, I've only read "Light on Snow" and it didn't really inspire me to rush out and buy any more!

VirginiaWoolf · 05/04/2008 22:24

Have read a few. Quick and easy to read, but a bit superficial, I thought - was surprised to find that she's supposedly a respected prof of creative writing somewhere.

auntyspan · 05/04/2008 22:24

Some of them are OK, but I think that's more to do with the original idea - the baby in the snow, the abused wife on the run, the plane crash etc etc.

The books that lack a real story line don't make up for in any other way like in other novels eg brilliant characterisation - and therefore are just dire.

Saying all that though I've still read them all

jennster · 05/04/2008 22:27

I've read a few and found them all wishy washy, but easy and quick to read.

Mum2b2BabyRoo · 05/04/2008 22:31

Not so impressed - read one and have no interest in reading any more of her books.

Panino · 05/04/2008 23:25

forgot - started reading " A wedding in December" but interest waned - nothing to recommend. V. boring, I'm afraid.

marina · 05/04/2008 23:34

Um, overrated.
Read one, then another, and realised they were pretty formulaic. I felt vaguely conned as the review I'd read of her work in general had indicated a depth and substance that I couldn't find.

For me, perfect holiday reading. Easy read, but better than a lot of the crap out there. Ditto Anne Tyler.

poodlepusher · 06/04/2008 14:33

I read one of her books at a writing retreat - it was in their library. I thought if it was there, it was probably a good read. (Don't know WHY!)
It was quite a romantic, dreamy kind of narrative with a big twist at the end - the woman in the romance, she'd died 20 years earlier and you realised the romance was entirely in the head of the guy who had driven off a road into a stream and accidentally killed her.

It totally undermined the story, didn't hold up structurally (i.e. he was walking around having CONVERSATIONS with someone who didn't exist).

I was very disappointed and a bit shocked and then I realised what kind of book it was - but it took me to the end before I twigged.

So that was probably me being slow and a bit thick but I'd never read her again.

Villette · 06/04/2008 17:32

Poodlepusher, I've read that book. I thought it was rubbish and I've never read another one of Shreve's books again.

saadia · 06/04/2008 17:34

I keep starting "A Wedding in December" but just can't get beyond the first few pages. I did like "Fortune's Rocks", although the age gap between the lovers was a bit questionable.

Iota · 06/04/2008 17:36

I read "All he ever wanted" and I found it quite dreary.

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 06/04/2008 17:39

She is one lazy cow.

The Pilots Wife, so much potential, and she threw it away with a lazy plot.

ArcticRoll · 06/04/2008 17:40

The only one I've finished was The Pilot's Wife, started a few others and abandoned them petty quickly as found them dull.

wheresthehamster · 06/04/2008 17:41

I've never read any before but got Wedding in December out of the library and ditched it after a few chapters. I was skipping half of it - Agnes's book - then found all the backgrounds to the characters tedious. Maybe the story is ok once it gets going but I'm not going to bother finding out!

AnitaShreve · 06/04/2008 18:03

Whaaa?

You bunch of bitches.

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 06/04/2008 18:08

And you are one lazy cow....be honest.
