It sounds brilliant, nothing weird about any form of journalling or diary keeping IMO.

Although I see from tha PP that a 'commonplace book' is different to journalling/diary keeping.

Stressybetty · 27/05/2024 18:30

Not weird, I've never had one but wish I had noted down books and films that had moved me in some way or I would want to read again. Might have to start one

JaninaDuszejko · 27/05/2024 18:31

I've been keeping a record of the books I read since 1996. A word of warning, the notebook is no longer pretty, the cover is faded, my children drew in it when small and the spine is now broken. But I love it.

A friend of mine describes my holidays as 'school trips'. I don't care, I wouldn't want to do her holidays either. Variety is the spice of life.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 27/05/2024 18:33

I don't do it, but I think it's a nice idea and not weird at all. Your friend sounds a bit narrow-minded.

DrJonesIpresume · 27/05/2024 18:39

A commonplace book, eh? I like that idea.

I wish I had one.

I was thinking of creating a spreadsheet for books I have read, but comments would be amazing!

I have a spreadsheet, a journal and I use The StoryGraph app which may be a touch too much data but it makes me happy!

I used to keep one when I was a teenager (mostly with love poems because of unsuitable crushes 😊) and I now have scraps of paper all over the place with quotes and poems and things ripped out of papers and magazines that I want to remember. So I need to get a decent looking notebook and start collating.

Toooldforthis36 · 27/05/2024 18:46

Sounds like a great idea!

I use the Goodreads app for this, it’s brilliant so I can document what I’ve enjoyed and also see what other are reading 👍👍

You sound like an insufferable female lead in an indie film Grin I'm teasing.

Perfectpots · 27/05/2024 20:35

No journal but I do have a spreadsheet with the book title, author and a rating. I then find it difficult to compare very different books and work out where they fit into my rating system.

I've done it for the last 5 yrs or so.

Find it helps me remember what I've read . I can remember finishing books, years ago, and thinking they were amazing , but now being unable to remember which these books were.

Gremlinsateit · 28/05/2024 02:31

It’s not weird at all. I wish I had kept up the one I had as a teenager. It would have saved me a lot of “what was that book where …” over the years!

ChessieFL · 28/05/2024 12:45

I have a book journal, a book spreadsheet and I keep track on Goodreads!

Carebearsonmybed · 28/05/2024 15:55

Journaling is a very popular hobby. Book journaling is a significant sub category of this

MermaidEyes · 28/05/2024 16:08

I don't any more, but I did years ago!
I read all my books in my tbr pile in alphabetical order. So every time I buy new books I slot them in according to whereabouts in the alphabet I'm currently reading up to. Now that's probably weird !

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 02/07/2024 11:59

I think it's a brilliant idea .

I read on kindle (mainly kindle unlimited ) so I don't have physical copies of books - and not even seeing a physical
Copy of the book as I'm reading (ie the cover), I find it very difficult now to keep track of what I've read .

I love Storygraph! All the charts and data created for you!

And I love it when you get an even split on a pie chart!

I'm the same, I'm glad someone else takes their school trips holidays.

I love writing things down. If I had more time weaned myself off MN and stopped bloody deleting account and re-registering, wasting time worrying about how often I clean my bathroom and if being called a milf would offend me and adopting strike though when I could just write a normal sentence FFS.

Isthiscorrect · 11/07/2024 20:48

I just started using a note book last year. DS bought me a beautiful notebook (I do live a notebook for alll sorts of things and I'm always tearing pages out for lists). This book was too nice for everyday use. It took me 6 months to work out I should be noting down the books I read. I rate them out of 10. Write a brief review. Note if I read it in hardback, borrow box or kindle. Add the number as I'm on for 100 books this year, I've never know how many I've read before.
Most importantly I can look back and find the title of a book to recommend.
Not weird at all.

Starch1e · 11/07/2024 20:57

Your friend is weird!
I've started again keeping a list of all the books I've read, like PPs it's so I don't forget what I've read. I'm now thinking I need to start ratings or short reviews too... 🤔

Gulbekian · 11/07/2024 20:57

I have a "handwriting journal" of sorts. Basically, ever since I was a child, I have always (trying not to be too weird about it!!!) had people write out their addresses, telephone numbers, etc. for me manually in their own handwriting. I've then stuck these slips of paper into a journal and kept them. I now have decades' worth of handwriting samples for many people.

I started it simply because, as a child, I was interested in the differences in handwriting but now I'm increasingly finding that people are really interested (and often thrilled) to receive a card for (say) their 50th birthday with a handwriting sample from when they were 5 or 10. It seems to bring a fun, personal element - albeit with a touch of nostalgia.

Burgerqueenbee · 11/07/2024 21:00

I have logged my read books on Pinterest for over a decade, one board per year. Wish I had started a commonplace journal when I was young, would be fascinating to go back through everything I read and films watched through my childhood!

MedicalCannabis · 11/07/2024 21:02

Weird as in unusual, maybe, but it sounds like a lovely thing.

CharlieDickens · 11/07/2024 21:07

Whatever you enjoy. I keep a journal. Sometimes I try to emulate a style of the author I'm into at the time and keep quotes from them. It's a great way to remember books. I love writing for pleasure.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 11/07/2024 21:14

It sounds lovely, and not weird at all. I was given a beautiful notebook and have been wondering what to do with it ...

I used to keep an alphabetical list of books I'd read, but for some reason I stopped.

KohlaParasaurus · 11/07/2024 21:20

I wish I'd kept even a simple list of books I'd read over the years with a few notes about each one. I do it now, but don't feel it has the same value because whereas 40-year-old me might have been interested to look back on what I was reading in my teens, 80-year-old me is unlikely to care much about what 60-year-old me is reading now.
