Love her non-fiction writing and The Mandibles.
Which of her novels should I read next?

We Need To Talk About Kevin - it’s a tough read but one of those books that stays with you.

AgentProvocateur · 23/05/2024 18:02

So Much For That and We Need To Talk About Kevin were both great. The only one I don’t really enjoy of hers was the tennis one (can’t remember its name). I love how all her books are so different from each other.

Willow12345 · 23/05/2024 18:06

We need to talk about Kevin is excellent. I wasn't so keen on the one about snooker - the post-birthday world

WithIcePlease · 23/05/2024 18:09

WNTTAK
I loved Post Birthday World

I loved Post Birthday World too…

KohlaParasaurus · 23/05/2024 18:11

I enjoyed Big Brother.

ChessieFL · 23/05/2024 18:12

Agree with Kevin, brilliant book.

I also really enjoyed Should We Stay or Should We Go? It’s about a couple who agree in their 50s that they will commit suicide together at 80, then sets out 12 different stories about how this decision might turn out. Despite the subject matter some of the stories are funny but it’s also a very moving book.

Definitelylivedin · 23/05/2024 18:14

I really liked post birthday world.

I've not read all of her books, but I really should as The Mandibles is one of my all time favourites.

PossumintheHouse · 23/05/2024 18:16

Kevin is the best, and the film does a good job at capturing the spirit of the book. Definitely read the book first.
Just about to start Should We Stay or Should We Go.

Lovetotravel123 · 23/05/2024 19:46

All of them are amazing. I agree with all those above. Work your way through them 🙂

Windthebloodybobbinup · 23/05/2024 20:02

Double fault is a great dissection of power dynamics in a relationship- read it several times

Funnywonder · 23/05/2024 23:24

I loved So Much For That. Brilliant.

MercianQueen · 24/05/2024 00:27

Should We Stay Or Should We go is brilliant. Genuinely challenged my thinking, but was incredibly funny too. Kevin of course is excellent.

Appalonia · 24/05/2024 00:43

I couldn't recommend one as all the suggestions above are great. I think she's a brilliant author. Also if you like thought provoking books, John Marrs is also v good, he looks at our current society and imagines how it could go in the future, especially 're technology...

Barleysugar86 · 24/05/2024 01:31

We need to talk about Kevin, So much for that and Big Brother are my favourites and very clever. I found a few of the others a bit disappointing (Double Fault and The New Republic especially!)

Willowcat77 · 24/05/2024 09:13

I love Lionel Shriver! My favourites are The Mandibles, The New Republic (very funny book, but weirdly underrated), The Standing Chandelier and So Much for all That. I love her intelligence and wit and also her complex, likabley unlikeable characters.

She has a brand new novel out called Mania, which is a satire on modern identity politics and is apparently extremely funny, so I'm looking forward to reading that next!

billymean · 24/05/2024 17:09

I've gone for Mania so that I read it whilst it's so zeitgeisty but will download the others mentioned after that.

A lot to look forward to by the sounds of it.

I enjoyed,
We need to talk about Kevin
The post birthday world
Double fault
The motion of the body through space (currently re-reading it)
Should we stay or should we go?

Less keen on,
So much for all that

Yes, I agree. She's a fantastic writer.
