This book Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarrow - is it too Shades of Grey for my 15yr old?

Bought my 15 year old the Fourth Wing book. I'd glanced through and thought it would their type of thing.
Last night they came to see me grinning quoting some blurb off the back about it being the next Fifty Shades of Grey.

Is it??????

My 15yr old is bright, autistic and a little socially/emotionally behind their peers (very toilet humour but huge empathy).

There is a fair bit of sex in it, not wildly inappropriate for a late teen. Read key bits yourself though if you have concerns.

I've read it and thought it had some problematic/ misogynistic ideas about relationships.

It was a bit Fifty Shades, in that I thought it was very badly written, and had some sex scenes which didn't exactly feel empowering for the woman.

The main male character in it who she is hopelessly in love with is a complete dick.

The dragon bits were good but the relationship stuff really let it down.

If I had a 15 year old, I woudn't be rushing to encourage them to read it.

Has she read Temeraire? Much more appropriate I'd say.

There’s sex in it but not hugely graphic- it’s more about the sensations than the acts “I tingled with bliss” rather than “he fingered my bum” if you see what I mean.

They are trashy but I enjoyed them, I don’t think a 15yo would be traumatised.

I think I might remove, the misogynistic comment concerns me alongside the crap sex scenes..

That has made me laugh...

My teen takes things very literally... what they make of that...

I don't think they'd be 'traumatised', but the sex scenes are very cringey and you also get the protagonist's internal monologue about how this guy is so awful but she just can't resist him. He treats her terribly but the sex is mind blowing. Etc, etc.

It's not a great message for a 15 year old and it's unpleasant in terms of how the girl is so head over heels for this guy who is treating her awfully.

Honestly, I'm really disappointed that this book has become so popular.

It's badly written trash and I'd say even potentially harmful in terms of how teenagers might see themselves/ relationships/ men as a result of it.

Rebusmyfire · 30/04/2024 13:24

I've gone to remove it but looks like they've taken it to school....

Don't remove it. Banning books is never a good idea. Teenagers read all kinds of crap. Every single teenage girl in the 80s read Flowers in the Attic which is a gothic novel series that has an incestuous relationship at the heart of the story. And everyone's favourite bonkbuster Lace (the goldfish!).

Ask her about what she's reading, read the book yourself, suggest similar books you've read yourself that are better quality writing. But please don't ban the book, it will just make it more attractive and she'll just read it behind your back.

I did chat with them the other day. I said I'd looked more into it and the sex scenes didn't bother me. What I was more concerned about is posdible misogyny.

They looked at me and said.
"No way you getting this back. I'm on page 163. ..............I can see now where the characterisation is going with the person they fancy, but trust me to see it and have an opinion on it. I'm not stupid."

My child is a teen boy (if that makes a difference).

Update:
The book.is going to the charity shop unfinished. They have decided the plot has become stupid. Not enough dragons.

Try Temeraire. Much more boy friendly, much more dragons.
