Hiya

Has anyone read The Night Circus? It was such a brilliant and magical experience.

Can anyone recommend something like it please?

I bloody love Laura Purcell @TeabySea I read The Whipsering Muse (her latest), Bone China and The Shape of Darkness.

Have you read The Shape of Darkness? It's my fav! I'm so obsessed by her writing and I just can't put her books down.

Fantastic recommendation @TeabySea cheers! 😊💫

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is amazing. Also liked The Ten Thousand Doors of January.

Edit: I see a PP recommended both these too!

Would also add The First Fifiteen Lives of Harry August. A little different, but so good.

I think if you like The Night Circus and Piranesi (as recommended by many on the thread, The Night Rainbow by Claire King would be a good fit.

Chocolat by Joanne Harris always felt to me like a bit of a rip off of Like Water For Chocolate by Laura Esquivel, but for those who holiday in France. It's good, but sort of pleased with itself in a way that grates with me. (That's true of most of Harris's books, I find.)

South and Central American have a great tradition of Magical Realism, so if you find you enjoy that - it can be an acquired taste - Isabel Allende can be a good entry point.

From Stardust, I'd suggest Gaiman's Neverwhere. It's delightful.

@LenaLamont Oh thank you for writing your thoughts

Have you tried the Rotherweird trilogy, by Andrew Caldecott

Also Rupert Thomson (possibly my favourite writer)The Insult and Dreams of Leaving (that's two different books btw)

JaninaDuszejko · 11/04/2024 20:13

Agree with @LenaLamont , The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende is probably your best starting point for South American magic realism. I love 100 Years of Solitude but I think it's a more challenging read.

@TonTonMacoute No, all new to me, thank you for writing some recs down and I hope you find a title or two on this thread you like 😁

@JaninaDuszejko Thank you for thinking of Isabel Allende, I have never read South American/magical realism writers so if you think starting with her will be less daunting, I will give it a go thankyou 😁

I Loved The Night Circus and agree with the poster who said it was like reading a dream. Never quite experienced the same since but some I have really enjoyed The Toymakers by Robert Dinsdale, Feathertide by Beth Cartwright, The Winter Garden by Alexandra Bell, The House in the Cerulean Sea by T J Klune and Once Upon A River by Diane Setterfield

DiggoryVenn · 18/04/2024 20:48

@TonTonMacoute Rupert Thomson is one of my favourites too - never met anyone who has ever heard of him. Dreams of Leaving blew me away.

@DiggoryVenn @VioletMcRobins Many thanks for your kind recommendations Smile People have been very helpful so I'm glad we got a lot of recommendations here.

Tbf I wouldn't have never checked out many of these books if posters didn't recommend them. Thank you all!
