Can I recommend a book to you?

It was a book club choice. It's not often that I really enjoy a book but I loved this one - it's called The Echo of Old Books, by Barbara Davis. It's about the owner of a second-hand bookshop who discovers the stories behind two of the books. It's kept me up at night, desperate to find out what happens next. I've had recommendations here before (enjoyed The Scapegoat by Daphne du Maurier) so thought I'd share mine.

This sounds really interesting! I’m going away next week so I’ll pick it up this weekend. Thank you for the inspiration.

Thanks. Will check it out. Always looking for recommendations.

FleaDog · 29/03/2024 22:44

I will try to find it at our library, op. Thnks for the recommendation.

Can I recommend a book?

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin.

A friend passed me their copy and said they had had it ecommended, it absolutely did not seem like it would be her sort of book, and I thought the same too, but it is a brilliant book.

Hope some mumsnetters gve it a try!

I love The Scapegoat by Daphne Du Maurier. I found it in the barn conversion where DH and I stayed, in Charente, when we got engaged. It's such an intriguing read and always reminds me of our month there.

Can you give us a clue without giving anything away?

It's about 3 friends who work in the gaming industry and how life unfolds, the differences of people.

A bit of an odd description, and I am a complete luddite so it really would not have appealed to me but it kept me up as I'd try to squeeze in a couple more chapters when I should have long been asleep!

Mothership4two · 30/03/2024 02:44

The Echo of Old Books and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow are in the 'to read' pile already.

I read all of Daphne Du Maurier's books in my teens (having been captivated with Rebecca) but cannot remember The Scapegoat - it was a long time ago!

HollyGolightly4 · 30/03/2024 03:38

Thanks OP, it's free on kindle unlimited. Suffering from insomnia so have just downloaded it now!

EmmaGrundyForPM · 30/03/2024 04:49

@FleaDog I second Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow.

I was put off it for ages because I thought it was about computer gaming, but it was then one of the books chosen in my book group so I had to read it.

Such a brilliant book, I loved it.

Fandangoes · 30/03/2024 04:52

I loved Project Hail Mary - I normally hate a I-fi but this was a book club choice so I gave it a go and so glad I did! Absolutely loved it!

Autienotnaughtie · 30/03/2024 05:24

I read it not long ago it was lovely.

I'd like to recommend

The seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo.

Weyward

The lost Bookshop

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 30/03/2024 11:07

I also was put off Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow because I know nothing about gaming, so thank you, I'll give it a go.

@LuluBlakey1
I hadn't come across The Scapegoat - it doesn't seem to be well known. It has its flaws, but it's the setting - it paints such a wonderful picture of France, which is one of the main reasons I loved it so much.

Thank you for recommended project hail Matt ! I loved it although much of it was
Incomprehensible to me!!!

Abracadabra12345 · 03/04/2024 20:50

Oddly, I didn't like Echo of Old Books, the Lost Bookshop or the Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo which goes to show how subjective our tastes are when it comes to books.

I did love Grace by Victoria Scott

Thank you for the recommendation OP. It made me think what would I recommend and tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow is the book for me. I read it last August and it has really stuck with me. If anyone hasn't read it, I'd highly recommend this one also!

Redhothoochycoocher · 04/04/2024 07:10

And to the PPs asking what it's about, the gaming element is just the backdrop. It's about friendship but it's just so beautifully done. I also stayed up too late trying to read just a little bit more and felt bereft when it ended.
