Hello! I'm looking for some new audiobook recommendations. Most of the ones I've enjoyed I've found through MN threads :)
Ones I've enjoyed so far;

  • Hello Beautiful (Ann Napolitano)
  • Still Life (Sarah Wingman)
  • Wild & Sleepless Nights (Clover Stroud)
  • tomorrow, tomorrow and tomorrow (Gabrielle Zevin)
  • The Dutch House (Ann Pachette)
  • The Five (Hallie Ruebenhold)
  • Lessons in Chemistry

Anyone enjoy these and have others they'd recommend? I don't particularly like crime or anything with too much violence (tried American Dirt but couldn't get past the first few chapters)

Thanks so much! Hope this will help others find good audios too :)

Weyward is brilliant - that's what I'm listening to at the moment.

smashedbanana · 21/03/2024 12:33

@needahouseindurham I tried it but found it a bit all over the place with the different eras. You're the third person who's recommended it though so I think I should try it again! Thank you! ❤️

None Of This Is True by Lisa Jewell is fabulous on audiobook!

DancefloorAcrobatics · 30/03/2024 21:38

The Puzzle Woman by Anna Elroy such a lovely and interesting book.

I had it as an audio book via library app but also bought a hard copy. Its bookshelf worthy!

Zebresia25 · 30/03/2024 21:57

I’m currently listening to Circe by Madeline Miller. Prior to that books I have enjoyed listening to over the last few months include:

Hamnet (Maggie O’Farrell)
Song of Achilles (Madeline Miller)
Mrs Benson’s Beetle (Rachel Joyce)
Small Things Like These (Claire Keegan)
American Gods (Neil Gaiman)
The Rivers of London series (Ben Abramovich)

I agree. It was a great story and really well told.

Quizine · 30/03/2024 22:16

Biography and non fiction are my thing mostly, so these may or may not appeal, but I found them fascinating and so good to listen to when out and about or doing boring things around the house. I like thrillers also, but will read anything that's decently written, so will get some ideas here I'm sure!

My Year Off, Robert McCrum. About the young writer and editor who had a massive stroke. Awe inspiring journey to recovery.

Sapiens, a brief history of humankind. Yuval Harari. As it says in the title.

The Chancellor (Angela Merkel) Kati Marton, great listen all about her.

Rememberings, Sinead O'Connor. What a story, beautifully told.

The Bettencourt Affair *Tom Sancton. About Liliane Bettencourt, the heiress to the 40 billion L'Oreal fortune. Superb.

Unorthodox Deborah Feldman. About a Jewish woman's escape from a religious sect, set in US.

And so many more.

*My no. 1 fave on this list.

I LOVE Rivers of London series but haven’t tried it on audio book- I shall for the next one!! Who does the narration?!

MrsGalloway · 30/03/2024 22:26

A Terrible Kindness by Jo Browning Wroe, loved this

piefacedClique · 30/03/2024 22:28

Magpie by Elizabeth Day is amazing. I drove an extra hour home just to keep listening!

If you like David Mitchell his book on British Kings and Queens is free on Spotify. It was very interesting but was very David and he narrates it so if you aren't a fan it's probably not for you.

whiskyremorse · 31/03/2024 09:53

'The son in law' by Charity Norman is excellent. An interesting, well written story and has different narrators for different characters which adds a new level to the story. 4.5 stars well deserved.

Theoldwoman · 31/03/2024 10:14

I love autobiographies, and I’m currently listening to Here’s the Story by Maureen McCormick. I was a huge Brady Bunch fan growing up, and her life was very interesting and sad and amazing!

Kobna Holdbrook-Smith - he does a great job IMO

Yep, seconding this - he’s the best narrator on Audible, I think.

smithson999 · 02/04/2024 23:45

Confessions of a forty something f#*% up is brilliant!

LoreleiG · 02/04/2024 23:48

I am enjoying Big Little Lies.

Hamnet, The Song of Achilles and American Gods are 3 of my favourite books! So many people have recommended Rivers of London to me but I really can't get into it.

OP, Tomorrow Tomorrow and Tomorrow was wonderful!

Others I've loved on Audible have been:
The Salt Path
Americanah
Demon Copperhead

I also recently enjoyed The Whalebone Theatre but I read the paperback so no idea what the narration is like.

Santasbigredbobblehat · 05/04/2024 07:56

Dear Edward is by the same author as Hello Beautiful. I liked both.

I’ve listened to most of your list, so here’s some I think are of a similar ilk.

Ask again, yes. Mary Beth Keane
The Most Fun We Ever Had. Claire Lombardo.
The Weekend. Charlotte Wood.
Tom Lake. Ann Patchett
The Giver of Stars. Jojo Moyes
Also Miss Benson’s Beetle.
I LOVE Rivers of London, but it’s different to the above.

smashedbanana · 05/04/2024 12:13

@Santasbigredbobblehat thank you, this is exactly what I needed!
Thanks everyone for the suggestions - I now have a great list to keep me busy ☺️
Hope this thread also helps others looking for audiobooks xx

All of the Nancy Mitford's are my comfort listens.

Recent favourites:

Bell Jar. (maggie gyllenhal fantastic narrator)
Demon Copperhead.
Lessons in Chemistry.
Currently listening to and loving Rebecca
despite having read several times over my lifetime

I also enjoy some classics-
Diary of a Provencial Lady
Making of a Marchoness
when I need something lighter

I also sample the narration if there are options-makes a big difference!

Santasbigredbobblehat · 05/04/2024 14:32

I went and had a look at my book lists. I think you might enjoy Akin and The Wonder by Emma Donoghue. Also A single Thread by Tracey Chevalier. The pleasure of small things has been mentioned.

skmissty · 05/04/2024 14:51

I've just recently discovered my Spotify has free e books so following along for suggestions! I don't have the attention span for sitting with an actual book these days however listening when pottering around is ideal!

Just found this list so will work my way through it. I'fe enjoyed some non-fiction recently.

I've recently 'read'

Shallow graves by Ray Fish. Life as a forensic scientist on big cases

Corrupt bodies by Peter Everett. Life in a London Morgue.

As you can see there's a theme building, I'm looking for a Sue Black book next.
