I have a 1982 copy of the above book but there is no name given for the cover artist and I'd really like to know who it is. Does anyone recognise the artist or know how to find out who it was?

I was intrigued by this but can't find anything either. Even a very detailed fan site has no idea: https://cslewiseditions.com/space-trilogy/that-hideous-strength/setting-5/#P1d

Looks like PAn Books are now part of Macmillan publishing. You could write to them to see if they have an archivist or records keeper who could look into who the artist was?

Turkeyhen · 16/03/2024 14:54

Could it be George Underwood?

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 16/03/2024 15:05

George Underwood has an interesting style but I don't think it fits with the cover art here, Turkeyhen.

I've searched for the cover artist everywhere but can't find anything at all. It's very vexing! If no one can identify the artist I'll go to the publisher and see if they can help, though it was a different company and nearly 40 years ago, so they may not know.

I do love this book, ( although it is hideously sexist).

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 16/03/2024 15:17

It's certainly sexist to us, cuckyplunt, but in 1945 a female character studying for a doctorate was probably very modern and progressive, even daring.

I love the story too and, as the story became increasingly strange, got so engrossed I put aside everything I was meant to be doing in order to finish it.

Is that the one where they bring Merlin forward in time? I read as a teenager and had that very copy. I might reread.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 16/03/2024 15:24

That's the one, hattymattie, only I think Merlin wakes up on his own. I loved how Lewis made him so confused about modern society and that he only spoke an obscure dialect of Latin.

I may be wrong but the first publication of that book with that cover was in 1968 which does certainly look like similar art work of the time.

Perhaps search other books of that year that were published by Pan to the artist?

I did a search on cover art from Pan in 1982 but didn't see anything familiar. There were some nasty images on book covers in 1982!

It's from 1968.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 16/03/2024 16:34

Oh yes, so it is. No joy on 1968 cover art either.
