Welcome to the Mumsnet 'Rather Dated' Book Group, where we read and discuss fiction from the 1930s to the 1990s that would have been described as 'contemporary' in its day.

The best introduction to the 'rather dated' concept would be to read the wonderful thread which inspired this group:

www.mumsnet.com/talk/what_were_reading/4596284-rather-dated?reply=119670989

To summarise, a number of posters expressed disappointment that literature of the 20th Century is often dismissed as 'rather dated' because society has moved on from many of the values and lifestyles described.

Previous posters decided to create a reading group where the literary merits of such fiction can be appreciated, with any 'rather dated' elements being a point of interest rather than a reason to dismiss a novel.

We read one book a month. Our first book, that inspired the original thread, was The Road to Lichfield by Penelope Lively. We have been going for about 18 months now, and each new book gets its own discussion thread, started on the first of the month.

Our March 2024 book is Penelope Fitzgerald's The Bookshop. We will begin the discussion of this on 1 April.

Please do join the thread whether you want to take part in the discussion or just place mark to follow it.

Fellow Rather Dated people, please add anything important I might have missed!

(With huge thanks to ImJustMadAboutSaffron for the original thread and idea).

I hope Antarcticant, who started the last thread, won’t mind that I’ve started this new one.

I just finished reading a book, published in 1977, set either 1975 or 1976. I went on Amazon to look at some reviews (I know these are not worth readi...

And just a reminder that Lynne Reid Banks' 'The L-Shaped Room' is our next book.

Thank you @MotherofPearl
Looking forward to talking about Saplings on the new thread!

olderbutwiser · 06/05/2024 20:45

I've just given up on Elizabeth Gaskell's Ruth - cannot take another sentence of it, I hope they all drown at the seaside and Mr B loses everything in the election.

Looking forward to The Sapling in the hope it it a bit more relatable. I'm very happy to take Rather Dated over Pious Waffle.

Just an alert for any Dorothy Whipple fans who can get the London Live TV station - they’re broadcasting the 1945 film of her book 'They Were Sisters' on Sunday at midday (and repeated on Monday at 1pm) . It’s pretty good and James Mason is horribly convincing as an abusive husband - quite chillingly so. Recommended!

I have to say, I did like the encounter between Ruth and Mr Bellingham on the strand, but your post made me laugh olderbutwiser!

📚 'Rather Dated' May: Lynne Reid Banks' 'The L-Shaped Room' 📚 http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/whatweree_reading/5088059-rather-dated-may-lynne-reid-banks-the-l-shaped-room

I've started the thread to discuss our most recent book.

I didn't realise that Lynne Reid Banks has died very recently (4 April). I'm inspired to read more of her books.

We need to decide what's next.

Thanks MotherofPearl for the new thread. * *

Illegally18 · 02/06/2024 23:29

love the Cazalet Chronicles. I also love Somerset Maugham. What a writer! I read him a lot in the 80s. such elegance in his style

StellaOlivetti · 03/06/2024 06:33

I also adore Maugham, @Illegally18 . I have read him all my life, starting as a teenager with Liza of Lambeth. I have used Mrs Cradock and Theatre as relationship advice my whole life too: How Not To Do It.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 16/06/2024 09:35

Has anyone any suggestions for our next book?

MotherofPearl · 16/06/2024 10:24

Yes Fuzzy, we do need to choose something - we're already halfway through June.

I see upthread there was some discussion about Barbara Comyns. How about Our Spoons Came from Woolworths?

I am not keen on magic realism which I think is a feature of some of her novels?

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 16/06/2024 10:31

Yes MotherofPearl! That sounds good.

MotherofPearl · 16/06/2024 10:51

I wonder if it's just us Fuzzy, or are others still following the group?

Have you read any Comyns before?

OP posts:
ChessieFL · 16/06/2024 11:37

I’m still here! I don’t always read every book suggested - depends if it’s something I fancy and how easily available it is - but I’m still following this thread and I do check in on the discussions about the books I haven’t read.

Happy with the Comyns suggestion, not come across her before.

MotherofPearl · 16/06/2024 11:55

Oh good, glad you're still here Chessie.

I've not read Comyns before either, but in looking her up I see a new biography has been published this year, so this seems a good sign. The biography is:

No Mother, I have never heard of Barbara Comyns before. I've bought the book on Kindle and will look forward to starting it.

Hope we can keep this group going as I really enjoy it.

Terpsichore · 16/06/2024 12:19

I’m still here, too. Bit surprised at how few people commented on The L-Shaped Room, but hopefully we have a new member as someone on another thread was keen to join!

ChannelLightVessel · 16/06/2024 12:45

I’m still here as well, but I don’t necessarily read/comment on every book, I’m afraid. And I’ve been rather absent recently, a combination of phone issues and DD’s deteriorating MH.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 16/06/2024 14:29

It's good to hear from you ChannelLightVessel 💐

Terpsichore · 16/06/2024 14:44

Sorry to hear about your DD @ChannelLightVessel 💐

StellaOlivetti · 16/06/2024 14:56

I’m still here too! I love Barbara Comyns and I don’t think I’ve read Our spoons came from Woolworths (don’t think so anyway) so I’d be v happy.

JaneJeffer · 16/06/2024 16:02

I think so far I have only read The Bookshop but then forget to post on the thread Blush I bought a very ancient version of The Fancy but haven't got round to reading it yet!

JaneJeffer · 16/06/2024 16:05

I did have a copy of Our Spoons Came From Woolworths years ago but I couldn't get on with it and gave it away.

I'm not very good at this Grin

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 16/06/2024 16:37

Feel free to join in any time Jane 😄* *

JaneJeffer · 16/06/2024 16:45

Thanks Fuzzy Grin
