50 Books Challenge Part Three

1000 replies

Southeastdweller · 24/02/2024 13:46

Welcome to the third thread of the 50 Book Challenge for this year.

The challenge is to read fifty books (or more!) in 2024, though reading fifty isn't mandatory. Any type of book can count, and please try to let us all know your thoughts on what you've read.

If possible, please can you embolden your titles and maybe authors as well of books you've read or going to read? It makes it much easier to keep track, especially when the threads move quickly at this time of the year.

The first thread is here and the second one here.

Thank for the thread South 😊

10. My name is Lucy Barton by Elizabeth Strout

I read Amy & Isabelle first and loved it so much I added of Strout other books to my wishlist and once the 99p sales happened in the wrong order I started getting them from the library.

I don't want to admit it, but I didn't understand this. I assume it is high brow writing and I am missing some sub text. The writing is disjointed. Conversations are never finished (a bugbear of mine). She doubts her own narrative as she writes it which made the whole thing seem a bit pointless to me. I didn't especially care what happened next, which is a shame as I already own book three or four in the series! I might try the next book, but I might give it a while... feeling a bit disappointed.

If it helps, I hated the first one, never bothered with the second one and loved the third and fourth one. The others are very different.

And latest reviews

35 Vain Shadow by Jane Hervey

Persephone book about a 1950s family gathering for the funeral of their husband/father/grandfather. I did like this but I was expecting it to be funny from the introduction and while there were one or two amusing moments the rest wasn’t really funny.

36 Universally Challenged by Anna Bell

In one universe Jessica split up with her boyfriend to take a job at an investment bank. In another universe Jess didn’t go to the job interview and married the boyfriend. Now they’ve woken up in each other’s lives. Good fun.

37 Patience by John Coates

Another Persephone book, this time about a woman in a disappointing marriage discovering her passionate side when she has an affair. This is satirical about the attitudes of men and women to marriage but even so I still found lots of the behaviour unrealistic.

nowanearlyNicemum · 24/02/2024 18:38

Oh noooooo, very concerned about the lack of love for Lucy Barton. It'll be a while before I get there as, having been won over by both Olive books, I'm now reading Strout's books in publication order but still Confused

SheilaFentiman · 24/02/2024 18:55

@BlueFairyBugsBooks you are nearly at the 50 already, amazing!

saturnspinkhoop · 24/02/2024 18:58

Apologies for asking, but where people have written lists of books, does it mean anything when some are bolded and others aren’t?

Owlbookend · 24/02/2024 19:00

I read My Name is Lucy Barton before i joined these threads and loved it. Anything is Possible (the sequel) I liked even more. I like the way she plays on how we view the past and seeing the same events from different perspectives. I've also read Abide with me, that I liked, but not as much. A bit heavy on religion for me.* *I Guess there a bit marmite.

Owlbookend · 24/02/2024 19:01

In the lists a bold means you thought it was really good

In lists, bold is for books you really rate, italics for any absolute stinkers.

In general posts we use bold to highlight a username if you are specifically talking to someone, any book titles or authors. We do this so it stands out and makes the thread easier to follow as several conversations might be happening at once.

Owlbookend · 24/02/2024 19:03

Thanks so much @Owlbookend and @FortunaMajor. I’m now going to read back over the lists to seek out the bolded titles. Always looking for new books…. 45 books in my to be read pile clearly isn’t enough.
