This is a new word for me. Described by publicity people as Game of Thrones meets 50 Shades.

There are several authors I learn.

Any one read any?

Never heard it described as such, but I've read plenty of romance with a fantasy setting. Love KJ Charles Charm of Magpies series just to think of one example.

Though it's not high fantasy, and has decent writing, so definitely not 50 shades meets GoT!

JaneLawrence · 23/02/2024 16:52

Is that the same sort of thing as paranormal romances where one of the romantic leads is a werewolf / vampire etc??

Phoebefail · 23/02/2024 17:09

The big names in romantasy are nearly all women: Sarah J Maas, Rebecca Yarros, Jennifer L Armentrout and Danielle L Jensen. The books follow a reliable template: a spunky heroine with a quest and an unusual, otherworldly male love interest with anger issues.
Good old Google. I just copied that from The Standard www.standard.co.uk/lifestyle/romantasy-fiction-booktok-explained-hauls-fairyloot-b1140802.html?lid=vw9v9xfsqmnw

Sex, dungeons and dragons: are you ready for romantasy?

The hottest trend in fiction is a blend of raunchy romance and fantasy, with the Game of Thrones-meets-Fifty Shades literature appealing to both teens and adults, says Maddy Mussen

It’s high fantasy. Not my thing. It’s also mostly ‘new adult’ - think Colleen Hoover. Basically young adult in terms of emotional maturity, plotline and pacing with some sex thrown in.

chickpea1982 · 25/02/2024 15:27

The quality varies massively, as you might imagine, but some are really good. I can recommend Jennifer Armentrout's Blood and Ash series, as well as Phedre's Triology by Jacqueline Carey and Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros (though I didn't really like the sequel). They are a bit young adult, but they are also really good stories.

My teenager reads about half those authors. I don't.

Im following!

Interestingly, I noticed that 4 out of the top 10 hardbacks this week in the Sunday Times bestseller list were romantsy.

Ooo have you got the link please @chickpea1982

I actually really enjoyed the Sarah J Maas novels. I skipped over a lot of the sex scenes as got a bit tedious but the writing and the character development especially of the female characters were top notch. The Throne of Glass series had a lot less sex than A Court of Thorns and Roses.

Evolutionarygoals · 06/03/2024 09:21

I'm very disappointed to find this isn't a genre of fantasy set in the Roman period.
