Can anyone recommend some really good horrors?

I've read just about all of the classics. I generally go for folk horror, occult detective fiction or plain old ghosties/paranormal.

Anyone read anything that's given you chills lately?

Robert Neville is good, he writes lots of stories based around folklore and superstition. Recommend The Ritual and The Reddening.

A random but excellent book I have on kindle, if ghosts/poltergeist type things are your thing was this -

Although if like me you suffer from horrible sleep paralysis it may not be wise!

RonHoward is apparently looking to make it (the link one) into a film

Also Amityville (sp?) Horror I read when I was 12 and it scared the absolute shit out of me at the time!

On a serious note - James Herbert books are great reads if you haven't already read them. His early stuff especially.

I’ve just bought Come Closer by Sara Gran. Not read it yet but it’s lkk a first person possession story and is meant to be v scary!

I really enjoyed The Watchers by AM Shine and also The Creeper by the same author.

Watching!

@tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz I've read lots of Adam Nevill, he's brilliant. Not read The Ritual yet so I'll add that to my list. The Cunning Folk in particular was fantastic! Thank you for the suggestions!

Like old horror books like The Entity and Amityville Horror

MaudGone · 15/02/2024 13:21

It's a short story, but have you tried 'The Horla' by Maupassant? It was in a Penguin edition of Maupassant's stories, I'm afraid I can't remember the title or translator.

FancyJapflack · 15/02/2024 13:22

The Ritual is one of my favourite books and films.

DramaticBananas · 15/02/2024 13:23

Susan Hill's The Small Hand

I honestly couldn't reccomend David Sodergren highly enough he's an indie published Scottish horror author and I love his work, The Harr and Maggies Grave are my fav 2 by him that I've read.

youdontneedtopoo · 15/02/2024 13:52

Someone recommended Dark Matter by Michelle Paver on an older thread, and I'd like to pass it on- it's really good!

eandz13 · 15/02/2024 14:14

@youdontneedtopoo I've read Dark Matter, absolutely brilliant! I'd recommend it to anyone that loves the eerie and atmospheric.

Thanks for suggestions everyone, adding everything to my next up list. Just googled David Sodergrens stuff @Bookwormmumuk, he sounds right up my street, think I'll start with Maggie's Grave.

Ghost Story, I remember getting chills on the tube in the middle of the day!

FromMilanToMinsk1 · 15/02/2024 14:54

I read two by Scott Carson back to back lately as I liked the first one so much. The Chill and Where They Wait. Both really good, and with definite folk horror elements, although not as overtly horror as Adam Nevill (I've read most of his, but I need to be in a good place mentally to embark on one as I find them so horrifying) or David Sodergren (I must admit I did not get on with Maggie's Grave at all - too lurid for me).

I really liked Sour Candy by Kealan Patrick Burke. It is genuinely creepy despite being a short novella less than 100 pages.

MaudGone · 15/02/2024 18:26

'The Magician' is a classic by Somerset Maugham.

The Maupassant collection I was thinking of was 'A Parisian Affair and Other Stories', translated by Sian Miles. I think 'The Horla' is the only horror story in it.

Last time there was a thread like this I bought two of the recommended, Naomi's Room and one about a dead son haunting his mother. Both were really bad imo. Gratuitously violent in the first case, clichéd and convoluted in the second. Off they went to the charity shop. I guess I need more info about why they are recommended and what other writers the person likes. It's better imo to find authors you like and then Google who THEY recommend.

Wow thank you for this! I bought and read it earlier and it was fabulous! It’s going to stick with me for a long time I think. Fleshed out a bit, it would make a great film!
