Kindle battery

Can someone help?

I think my kindle paperwhite is 9 years old. It's suddenly started draining the battery very quickly. Airplane mode is on and the back-light is not high.
Is there something I can do or do I, think its 9 years old and bite the bullet and get a new one?

Mine did this and they suggested a factory reset. However, in the end I just had to buy a new one. Amazon has a trade in offer where you get money off the be one if you return the old one.

Sadly I think after 9 years it is getting past its prime. Most electrical goods with rechargeable internal batteries die that way with me but I do use my phones/kindles al lot.
I would suggest phoning Amazon and asking about a battery replacement or where you can take it for repair and they may just send you a discount code or something. When I cracked the screen of mine I phoned to ask how to get kindles repaired, they sent a new one out immediately and I had it in my hands 16 hours later! I had to send my cracked one back and was told to keep the charger and accessories. Amazon make a few bob on Kindle purchases and Unlimited so want to keep you using a kindle.

You've got good life out of it at 9 years! I always buy the Kindle Fires, but they only seem to last 3 years before these kinds of battery issues. I've just had a new one bought for Christmas, but this time I've decided not to download anything onto it that I don't need ie Facebook, Messenger etc.
But yes, I'd ditch it and invest in a new one! It says on the internet that you can get new batteries, but weigh that up and the uncertainty of whether it would works, against the cost of another one, I'd rather get a new one!

I bought my Paperwhite at the end of 2013 and it seems fine to me ATM. Are you sure your charger is charging it up completely?

Exasperatednow · 12/02/2024 11:52

It charges to 97%. I read for 20 mins this morning and was down to 84% in that time. It used to last for weeks.

I had a similar issue though newer Kindle and I did a reset and update and it fixed it.

I mention the charger because I replaced the batteries once in a laptop - they do decline after a few years but the actual problem was the wire coming out of the charger - bend that in the wrong position and it stopped charging.. anyway new batteries for the laptop wasn't a waste of money but I did have to get a new charger.

Have you checked to see if there is an operating system update for the Kindle under Settings...Advanced Options... Update Your Kindle - I think there was only one possibly two in all the time I've had mine so... it's unlikely but worth checking.

I'd give the reset a go as a last resort. My Kindle only had 1.32Gb (currently it's full... again - I have to unload books to get new ones on) so if mine does go faulty I'd see it as a chance to upgrade to one with a lot more memory. You might find a computer/phone repair shop is able to replace the battery.

I checked YouTube and replacing a battery isn't that difficult (or isn't for this 10th generation Kindle) - the hard bit seems to be getting the case apart - here's a US based video but it shows you that it's not difficult - this is just plugged on - no soldering and not stuck in with loads of glue either - it might be different on an older device.

Following as mine is the same, seems to be losing its charge much quicker than it used to. But mine was the kindle that has WiFi and WAN. When looked into replacing mine just before Christmas they didn’t seem to have the WAN option anymore on paperwhites. But interesting Amazon trade in offers less for my kindle than my children’s ones which were the more basic ones without the mobile data connection but are older than mine.

Ferfecksackmammy · 12/02/2024 15:06

I had the same problem. It dramatically improved once I turned the WiFi off.

Exasperatednow · 12/02/2024 15:45

The WiFi is turned off. Pretty sure firmware is up to date. But will check. I'll try a reset.

I dontbthink its the charger. It is charging, just not holding the charge.
Typical as I'd just got a new cover...

Try letting the battery run out completely and then recharge. That used to work with phone batteries.

Exasperatednow · 12/02/2024 20:40

I'll give it a go!

Time for a new one but unfortunately the new ones are even worse. I get about 3 1/2 hours out of mine now before it needs charging. It often doesn't warn me it needs charging as well. It's only three years old.

Exasperatednow · 12/02/2024 23:20

That's disappointing. Mine used to go weeks and I read a lot!
