Page turner but not dark or disturbing?

I'd like to find a book to keep my attention through a flight so a page turner if possible but my good mental health is often a delicate balance so I try to avoid anything to dark or disturbing.

Does such a book exist? If so please make your recommendations.

Books I've enjoyed previously - St Mary's series, all Robin Hobb, Marian Keyes, Rivers of London series,

Thank you!

I enjoyed Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin. Beautifully written and definitely a page turner

Changingplace · 05/02/2024 06:34

Have you read anything by Lisa Jewel? Her books are page turners and keep me interested without being too dark.

BarbaraBuncle · 05/02/2024 09:37

Miss Buncle's Book by D E Stevenson. It was written in the 1930s. As my NN suggests, I love it. It's witty and an absolute page turner. Nothing horrible happens and it has a happy ending. And, there are two sequels.

stcrispinsday · 05/02/2024 18:11

The Number One Ladies Detective Agency
Sherlock Holmes
Cloud Atlas
Piranesi

Riverlee · 07/02/2024 21:47

Maeve Binchey books fit the bill
Jilly Cooper / Jackie Collins / Etc - bonk-busters! (But actually quite well written)

CoffeeBeansGalore · 07/02/2024 21:52

The "Why Mummy . . . " series by Gill Sims. Will make you laugh, cry & sympathise. She's brilliant!

Iona40 · 07/02/2024 21:54

I find robin hobb very dark, and Piranesi lthough enjoyed the Fool series. Try Hamish Macbeth or Agatha Raisin for lighter mysteries.

cornflower21 · 07/02/2024 21:56

Apologies for a long link, but there's a description of this book as well.
It's really good, definitely page turner, really recommend.

ponia · 07/02/2024 21:58

Another vote for tomorrow, tomorrow and tomorrow! I also really liked Yellowface and Trust recently. Someone else recommended Lisa Jewell- her books are pape turners alright and very readable but as an anxious person her book Then She Was Gone made me feel slightly ill!

DanceMumTaxi · 07/02/2024 21:59

Seven Sisters by Lucinda Riley. It’s the first book in a fantastic series. Would throughly recommend.

LadyWithLapdog · 07/02/2024 21:59

Slow Horses, then you can watch the Tv series as well.

HillyHoney · 07/02/2024 22:05

If you want some escapist fantasy then you might like Guy Gavriel Kay - sort of historical fantasy but nowhere near as dark as GoT and the like.

Mystery-wise, I love the Dandy Gilbert series by Catriona McPherson - 1920s lady detective, mainly set in Scotland (but more wry/humorous than that sounds!)

Have you read any Discworld? Very comforting books, I always think, but so clever.

The Richard Osman/Thursday Murder Club series is entertaining - the audiobooks are good too.

HillyHoney · 07/02/2024 22:08

Other authors to try - Barbara Trapido (very funny), Clare Chambers (never read a bad one) and Eva Ibbotson (set in mitteleuropa between the wars, always very warm and gently funny).

I came on to ask exactly the same question! Have a long flight next week and need something light enough to not need masses of concentration but compelling enough to amuse me. Will have a look through the recs!

I like everything you like apart from never reading any Robin Hobb, can you recommend a good one to start please?

PurpleWhirple · 07/02/2024 22:30

If you like Marian Keyes I would recommend Jojo moyes, her books are similarly light but v entertaining and easy to read

CricketWhites1 · 07/02/2024 22:32

Miss Benson's Beetle fits the bill

ShadowOfTheSeason · 07/02/2024 22:33

The Giver of Stars

HearMeSnore · 07/02/2024 22:34

Any objection to sci-fi? Project Hail Mary would be an absolute dream of a book to get lost in on a long flight.

Total page turner, right from the start. Likeable characters, tension, humour, a bit of mystery... and thoroughly life-affirming.

barkymcbark · 08/02/2024 08:08

My Sweet Revenge by Jane Fallow

Actually any of her books are really easy, kind of rom com books. The above really caught my attention and I read it on a day off, couldn't put it down. Had me laughing along at some points

OtterandPuffins · 08/02/2024 22:30

@LaviniasBigBloomers Assassins apprentice is the first one to start with. They are pretty much my all time favourite fantasy series.

Thank you for all the recs.

A few I already love, Jojo moyes in particular. I've read all of hers, loved the giver of stars.

I weirdly really don't like Terry Prattchet. I think it's the style of writing rather than the content. I find them hard to get into.

I'm really bad for starting books and not finishing, currently up to roughly chapter 4/5 in at least 15 different books!

Can I add a few more?

Corduroy Mansions by Alexander McCall Smith

The Beach Hut by Veronica Henry

The Ex Wives Club by Deborah Moggach

All lovely gentle reads.
