Two solo long haul flights next week......what shall I read?

I'm travelling for work next week and will have two 13 hour flights plus time in hotels while I'm away.
I'm travelling alone so see this an an opportunity to get lots of reading done.

I will literally read anything and have a ridiculous TBR pile but have decision paralysis!

Hit me with your recommendations of engrossing read. Extra points for anything set in Asia/China/ Hong Kong as that's where I'm travelling but anything that has been 'unputdownable' will do!

I loved Still Life by Sarah Winman -nothing to do with Asia though.

The HOnourable Schoolboy by John Le Carre is very evocative of a certain time and place.

I also loved Empire of the Sun...not sure whether it has aged well or not...

The book of crazy, rich Asians is great.

Chewbecca · 25/01/2024 12:57

Have you read the Robert Galbraith (JKR) Strike novels? They're really engrossing so great for long flights. (No Asia connection).

The Heart's Invisible Furies by John Boyne.

Unravelling Oliver by Liz Nugent.

A Man called Ove by Fredrick Backman

Currently reading Lessons in Chemistry - a novel, despite the name. Very funny yet thought provoking. Easy to read but may not last you a full 13 hours.

Unlawful Killings: Trials at the Old Bailey (Paperback)Her Honour Her Honour Wendy Joseph KC

Brilliant book by Old Bailey KC - really good insight into trials

DiamondGazette · 25/01/2024 16:12

The Last to Disappear - Jo Spain
I Found You - Lisa Jewell
The Room Mates - Rachel Sargeant
Pretties - Scott Westerfeld
Hiding In Plain Sight - Susan Hill
I Made a Mistake - Jane Corey

All unputdownable page-turners, not exactly classics but very readable and engrossing.

Hotel Babylon by Imogen Edwards Jones
Legacy by Susan Kay. Good if you're in the mood for something long and historical.
There are more in the Babylon series but I think Hotel, Fashion and Wedding are the best

Cornishmumofone · 25/01/2024 16:22

I'd recommend the Inspector Chen novels by Qiu Xiaolong: www.goodreads.com/series/52821-inspector-chen-cao

Chemenger · 25/01/2024 16:22

The Slow Horses series by Mick Herron. Even if you have seen the corresponding TV series they are different enough to still be a great read.

CestTout · 25/01/2024 16:31

I loved "These Is My Words: The Diary of Sarah Agnes Prine" read it over 20 years ago and it still sticks with me.
