50 Books Challenge 2024 Part Two

1000 replies

Southeastdweller · 22/01/2024 22:58

Welcome to the second thread of the 50 Book Challenge for this year.

The challenge is to read fifty books (or more!) in 2024, though reading fifty isn't mandatory. Any type of book can count, and please try to let us all know your thoughts on what you've read.

If possible, please can you embolden your titles and maybe authors as well of books you've read or going to read? It makes it much easier to keep track, especially when the threads move quickly at this time of the year.

Kinsters I'm so sorry to hear that, please look after yourself. Sending you all best wishes.

TattiePants · 16/02/2024 08:07

@Kinsters sorry you’re having to go through that. Take care of yourself.

SheilaFentiman · 16/02/2024 09:23

Sending love @Kinsters

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/02/2024 09:43

@CoteDAzur Admit it. The Martian is also a children’s book - with extra potatoes.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/02/2024 09:43

Sending love and hope @Kinsters

Update on my self imposed 'Matt Haig Challenge'

Sorry but I had to DNF the 'Dead Fathers Club. Far too repetitive (the main characters name was repeated about four times at one point) and the writing style wasn't very good. I think it was meant to be written in the style of a child, but it was quite hard to follow.

It was one of his earlier books though. His earlier work can be quite slow.

I'm on to 'How to stop time' next.

Kinsters · 16/02/2024 10:07

Thanks for all the kind words everyone.

ICrunchCrispsNotNumbers · 16/02/2024 10:10

Thinking of you @Kinsters x

Stowickthevast · 16/02/2024 10:29

So sorry @Kinsters, a close friend went through multiple rounds of IVF and she said that feeling when you're about to miscarry is soul-destroying. I hope you can find some distraction in reading.

@UnaPeacock thanks for the recommendations. I've added both to my wish list.

splothersdog · 16/02/2024 10:44

Catching up and sending love to @Kinsters

InTheCludgie · 16/02/2024 11:21

Much love to you @Kinsters hope you're OK x

bibliomania · 16/02/2024 11:37

Sympathies, Kinsters.

DuPainDuVinDuFromage · 16/02/2024 11:48

I’m sorry you’re going through that @Kinsters x

8 Le Jardinage pour les Nuls - Michael MacCaskey tr. Valérie Martin-Rolland (in French) Gardening for Dummies, translated - I found it in the library and thought it would be useful in teaching me how to deal with our newly-acquired large garden, as well as being good French practice. I was right on both counts - my vocabulary has expanded hugely and I now know lots of the theory of gardening (whether it translates into actual ability remains to be seen). My main takeaway is that gardening is (a) bloody hard work, (b) time-consuming, and (c) expensive. But I’ll do what I can, armed with a bit more knowledge than before!

It’s taken me a while to get through this as it’s obviously not intended to be great literature - I’ve read a few things alongside but have focused on this over the last few days as it needs to go back to the library, so I’m looking forward to moving onto something new!

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 16/02/2024 12:10

Bravo @DuPainDuVinDuFromage
'Il faut cultiver notre jardin' (!).

I'm reading a book in French at the moment and it's going to take me a while as my reading pace is much slower than in English, obviously. It's a memoir by Romain Gary. 'La Promesse de l'Aube'. It's good so far. Quite entertaining as he was a bit of a character and lived a colourful life. It's not difficult to grasp either. Not too complex.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 16/02/2024 12:39

@TattiePants

I think you will like it but part of the reason I enjoyed it so much was that it was such a good audio

@CoteDAzur

Ha! At the last line of your review

A film is coming with Ryan Gosling. I have seen The Martian but not read it. It may be time to rectify that much to Remus's chagrin Grin

MrsALambert · 16/02/2024 17:41

sorry you’re going through that @Kinsters 💐

saturnspinkhoop · 16/02/2024 18:04

InTheCludgie · 16/02/2024 07:29

@saturnspinkhoop I love Michael Connelly's books too, I find them really easy reading and quite atmospheric. I've only read up to The Burning Room though and not met Renee Ballard yet.

If you haven’t done so already, you’ll have to try the books with Mickey Haller. They are great too, although they are court room thrillers rather than detective novels.

saturnspinkhoop · 16/02/2024 18:04

Hope you’re doing ok, Kinsters.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/02/2024 18:14

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit I think you might like it.

@ICrunchCrispsNotNumbers I admire your Matt H challenge, but fear for you. In my (admittedly limited) experience, I’d say he’s a dreadful writer.
