Good audiobooks suggestions

I'm travelling on some long journey for the next couple of weeks and am looking for good audiobooks suggestions. I'm pretty new to audiobooks but have enjoyed the recent Richard Osman, Curtis Sittenfield and a Lisa Jewel book, mainly because the standard of reading has been really good.
Some others have been pretty dire .
Has anyone tried the new Ann Patchet as an audiobook?

My idea of heaven is laying in a hot bath listening to Stephen Fry read Sherlock Holmes or P. G. Wodehouse.

Certain writers were just made for audiobook: Evelyn Waugh, Dickens, Wodehouse...oh, and the ghost writer M R James. I'd also recommend Brian Blessed reading his autobiography. Wonderful.

My favourite audiobook of all time is Michael Maloney reading Aldous Huxley's Chrome Yellow.

Yes the new Anne Pratchett is great on audio. Meryl Streep’s reading is fantastic and the relationship between the main character and her daughters is really interesting.

Other audio I’ve enjoyed includes:
Fire Rush by Jacqueline Crooks (shortlisted for the Women’s Prize)
The Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch (crime/fantasy- brilliant narration)
Prophet Song by Paul Lynch (won the Booker this year- dark but excellent)
If you’re into classics, any read by Juliet Stevenson, Mrs Dalloway read by Annette Benning/ The Bell Jar read by Maggie Gyllenhall/ Bleak House read by Miriam Margolyes and Dubliners read by Andrew Scott- all cracking narration.

Do you have the BBC Sounds App? The Flatshare is on there and it's quite enjoyable.

I like the Strike books. He isn't brilliant at all the accents but you get used to it. Also v good value for money as some are 30+ hours long!

EggTheFirst · 24/01/2024 17:08

If you have Audible, David Copperfield directed by Sam Mendez starting Nchuti Gatwa is AMAZING.

Pixilicious1 · 24/01/2024 17:08

I second the Strike books by Robert Galbraith and anything by Marian Keyes

Thankyou all so much great suggestions, some I've read as actual books. I think one of the problems for me with audiobooks is the pace they just seem very slow but on 7 hour coach journey s that may be absolutely fine.

OnAudible…
Juliet Stephenson reading Jane Eyre.
Graham Norton reading his own novels.
Daphne Du Maurier
There’s a good collection of Jane Austen novels which is dramatised. Abridged a bit but quite good. I listen to these if I’m struggling to sleep as they are familiar and comforting.

You can set the speed to 1.25 or 1.5 if you find the reading too slow.

Chickoletta · 24/01/2024 22:54

Just remembered another one which I loved on a long car journey - Michelle Obama reading her autobiography. Excellent.

Santasbigredbobblehat · 25/01/2024 07:18

I enjoyed Tom Lake. I did slightly turn the speed up though…

The Dutch House with Tom Hanks. Same author as Tom Lake.
I just listened to The Children’s Book with Juliet Stevenson. That was well read.

I very, very much enjoyed the audiobooks of the DCI Jack Logan series by JD Kirk. Angus King reads them and they're brilliant. Very funny and the characters really improve as the series continues.

Sunflowers098 · 25/01/2024 16:05

Windswept and interesting Billy Connolly, Barack or Michelle Obama, anything by Bill Bryson ( as long as he's reading it)
Not over fussed on novels because male readers can't do female voices and vice versa..and I find it a bit annoying. But Madeline Miller Circe and The Song of Achilles would be the exception- brilliant! Love a good audiobook!

Mboscodictiasaur · 25/01/2024 23:01

I second "Windswept and Interesting" by Billy Connolly. I like autobiographies. Bob Mortimer "And Away..." is also very good.

Stephen Fry "The Stars' Tennis Balls".

The dramatisation of Phillip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy is very good. Read by the author and various others.

Rainsdropskeepfalling · 25/01/2024 23:15

The slow horses series is good.

Just came across this thread and as a keen audiobook listener…

Are you interested in World War 1? My Dear, I Wanted to Tell You, and The Heroes’ Welcome, both by Louisa Young, are superb. Available on Audible.

American Wife ( Curtis Sittenfeld) and The Help (Kathryn Stockett), both had me hooked, too.

FiftynFooked · 09/02/2024 07:10

The Echo Chamber by John Boyne read by Richard E Grant.
The Stranger Times series. Can't remember author or readers names but they are hilarious and the reader is fabulous! You forget it's just one person-it could be an entire cast

@ÚlldemoShúl
I'm late on this thread but looking for something for myself - agreed "The Bell Jar read by Maggie Gyllenhall" is excellent.
