The Dresden Files (Jim Butcher) - suggestions for similar?

I am going on holiday next month, first one abroad in almost 5 years, and I am desperate to load up my Kindle & take full advantage of some relaxation time. In between spending time with my husband & children, of course!! I absolutely loved The Dresden Files (Jim Butcher) and, to slightly a lesser degree, The Nightside Series (Simon R Green) - anyone know of anything similar that I can sink myself into!? Thanks in advance🙂

Kim Harrison - Dead Witch Walking saga

Kelly Armstrong - Otherworld saga

I really enjoyed Jim Butcher’s Codex Alera. Same feel as Robin Hobb.

Rivers of London series
Alex Verus series

i think there is reference to Dresden in one of these!

Try Butcher’s other series too; Codex Alera and Cinder Spires (don’t be put off they sound high fantasy but same humour and ‘real’ people as Dresden

The Collector Chris F Holm
Dr Greta Helsing Vivian Shaw
Miriam Black Chuck Wendig
The Immortal Empire Kate Locke

Also assume you’ve read Neverwhere but if not do that now!!

Was coming on to say this! It's like Dresden Files crossed with Line of Duty imo. But funnier and the male gaze is... still there, but the main character is less obnoxious and more geeky than Harry Dresden.

(You just KNOW that Dresden's oft-mentioned favourite coat reeks of BO and cigarette smoke.)

MorphandMindy · 02/01/2024 23:08

I meant Rivers of London - didn't spot there was a second series mentioned there!

WithASpider · 02/01/2024 23:25

Loved Alex Verus.

Dresden files and Codex Alera are some of my faves! Butcher's son James has a series too which is good.

I also really enjoyed John Connolly's Charlie Parker books - there's 18 of them so should keep you going for a while.

A few I don't think have been mentioned:
Ben Aaronovitch Rivers of London series
Mike Carey Felix Castor series (he has others as MR Carey which are ok but not as good)
Kelley Armstrong several different series - try Women of the Otherworld

IggysPop · 03/01/2024 06:41

And to add to my earlier, both Rivers and Alex Verus are brilliant on audible (as are the Dresden Files).

TabbyM · 03/01/2024 11:08

Second the Alex Verus recs - Benedict Jacka has the first of a new series out too.

TL Huchu's The Library of the Dead series are also good, as are Garth Nix's The Left-Handed Booksellers of London and The Sinister Booksellers of Bath and Daniel O'Malley's The Rook for urban fantasy in a recognisable UK setting.

Going off piste would recommend Martha Wells for Murderbot and others.

Thank you for all of the recommendations - much appreciated! Will check them all out & get my Kindle loaded, only 37 days until flight takes off!

John Conroe Demon Accords. All on unlimited.

Definitely the Vivian Shaw books about Dr Greta Helsing - wish she’d write more!
Rivers of London, but start at the beginning.
A bit left field, but maybe Jodi Taylor’s Time Police books?
