Year of wonder 2024

This thread is for anyone wanting to do a year of wonder or wants to dip in and out. Yesterday was:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0wNTNEZYoHg&list=PLVQnaCD0GZRgl8VfVIxZYzHRiFYXC5rvZ&index=1&pp=iAQB8AUB
Bach and Sanctus which I think means Holy. To me I loved this and listened to it after a very long walk around the coast near here and I felt it was like a proper renewal with waves crashing.

Today is Chopin

JS Bach - Mass in B Minor - Sanctus

JS Bach's Mass in B Minor, Sanctus. Performed by the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Bavarian Radio Chorus conducted by Eugen Jochum, 1982

Yes please! I enjoyed the Bach yesterday, haven’t had chance to read/listen to today’s yet.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 02/01/2024 13:46

Hello! I might dip in and out of this. I did both Years of Wonder and have become very fond of the playlists. Happy listening!
The Bach Sanctus is wonderful.

MissMarplesNiece · 02/01/2024 13:58

I've listened to pieces for 1st and 2nd January. I love Bach so know that piece. The Chopin was new to me.

AliasGrape · 02/01/2024 14:30

Revisiting this year. I really enjoyed the Bach

Excited about tomorrow’s piece already 😁

BookWorm45 · 02/01/2024 14:32

I dropped out of doing this last year but would like to start again!

Are you looking forward to the Caccini piece on the 3rd of February Alias? 😄

Buttalapasta · 02/01/2024 16:27

I am doing this too! I have already read the book and listened a few years ago but happy to revisit. I wonder how difficult the Chopin would be to play....

ReadyForPumpkins · 02/01/2024 16:29

I'll dip in and out too.

I was thinking that when I listened - I felt the piece of trying to make it exceptionally hard rather than an awesome piece of music - if you see what I mean? So that you would be in awe of the pianist ….

Wikipedia says this about the pieces…..
Chopin's Études are technically demanding, and require players to have significant experience with speed, arpeggios, and trills even in weaker fingers.[7]

Didn't Chopin write it as a "teaching" piece so that students had to really practice their right hand manoeuvres.

Haha can’t wait (I listened to it quite a lot after discovering it thanks to the book, but haven’t for a while - might save it up as a treat now, got to have something to look forward to to get us through January 😂)

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 02/01/2024 19:58

I like this Chopin étude. It's vigorous, full of energy and is definitely technically impressive. I prefer Chopin's nocturnes, however. And nocturnes by other composers as well.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 02/01/2024 19:59

I know @AliasGrape 😁
I listened to it, I must admit. I love a good lively Caccini.

ChessieFL · 02/01/2024 21:20

I’ve just listened to the Chopin. I liked it but I can imagine how much of a challenge it must be to play!

ReadyForPumpkins · 03/01/2024 08:38

Thanks for the link on YouTube. I never much like the Chopin Etudes. It's technically impressive and I can't imagine I will ever be able to play it. But it's just not something I enjoy listening to.

ReadyForPumpkins · 03/01/2024 13:10

Today is a medieval chant by Hildegard of Bingen. I enjoyed it and listened to an album of her music by VocaMe on Spotify. The album is meditative and makes me feel very calm.

Thebookdragon · 03/01/2024 13:33

@ReadyForPumpkins I agree this was just lovely, totally lovely, the title means O holy prayer I think. It felt like a y cascade over you and cleansing you.

Having read the book 🤦‍♀️Doh yes Chopin’s pieces are the teaching ones so yes they are designed to highlight technique and skill @MissMarplesNiece 👍👍

I’m back to work in the morning but going to try (emphasise try with two teenagers to try to get out of the house) to do tomorrow’s before I go to work.

are there many female composers in Year of Wonder? I wonder…. Female composers are often over looked I think.

@Thebookdragon I have followed both books on and off. The author promotes female composers definitely. They are often overlooked and are much less prominent than males.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 03/01/2024 15:50

There are many female composers in the two books. It's an eye opener (unfortunately) how often women who composed music were ignored or repressed.

I came on to say the same as ReadyforPumpkins. I listened to the album earlier and enjoyed it. It's beautiful, powerful and has an ethereal charm.

Decklededge · 03/01/2024 18:16

Thanks so much for the thread! I tried to read this last year but got so behind! I gave up in April. I’m doing it again as I love music.
I absolutely love that Bach piece. It’s such an earworm for me. I love the Chopin too.
I already knew it but I listened to the other 11 studies in that group (opus?). This one was the best one.
