I work for an SA company and have family links there. I'm keen to read some SA fiction as I love using reading to absorb culture. Can anyone recommend any books?

I enjoyed The Brigandshaw Chronicles by Peter Rimmer.
Not specifically SA as it covers other countries as well and a swathe of the history of southern africa .
Not the greatest literature but lots of factual background woven into a story.

Thank you! I'll look it up

Dont let’s go to the dogs tonight - set in that part of the world (it’s been 20 years since I read it).

Do not go gentle by futhi ntshingila

Cry the beloved country is amazing. We had a little to choose from for 14 yesr old English class, I'd never heard of it but loved the title. An astonishing book.

As a kid i read some Beverly Naidoo, worth a look.

Frankie and Stankie by Barbara Trapido is set in SA, and is semi autobiographical. As I remember it goes through the history of SA.

Disgrace by JM Coetzee.

LadyWithLapdog · 02/01/2024 11:22

@Lastexmouse I’ve just ordered a 2nd hand Frankie and Stankie. I was listening to a Barbara Trapido book on the radio and really liked it and planned to read some more.

JM Coetzee - Disgrace (but also Elizabeth Costelloe and Slow Man)
Anything by Nadine Gordimer but definitely "The Conservationist". Amazing novel.
Someone's already mentioned Galgut, but I would read "The Good Doctor" if you enjoy "The Promise".

Another vote for Frankie and Stankie
And if you want to expand to Rhodiesia/Zimbabwe then read Mukiwa

Pretty sure that one is set in Zimbabwe.
