My son is a reluctant reader (he is nearly 12 and I believe has a reading age the same) he has been watching Harry Potter movies this holiday and has promised me if I get him Harry Potter the Cursed Child he will read it. But the ones I can find is a screen plan script, is there a novel ? Thanks

No it's just the script and not very good. He'd be much better off reading the actual books

Regulus · 26/12/2023 23:23

Agree, there is so much more in the books.

Ok thanks

If he has watched all the films, but doesn't want to commit to reading all the books, then maybe get The Tales of Beedle the Bard, it's a book of short stories that is mentioned in the Deathly Hallows films.

The books are 100% better than the films and 200% better than cursed child

NeverStopTwinkling · 30/12/2023 08:13

What makes the cursed child good is that the stage show has loads of very cool effects and scenery. The actual play itself is just... Ok.

The harry potter books are good. What about something more like a fact book, like an HP almanac? Less of a chapter book so less daunting. There are loads of spin off books likes that. My DS can read a chapter book but he really loves facts books and magazine style reading.

DD has always bee a good reader but is also reluctant. She finds the amount of words I a page overwhelming and loses interest quickly.

DD enjoyed reading the play and has read other plays since so don't discount it entirely. By the nature of the format there is more white space on the page.

Other books for reluctant readers that age are Diary of a Wimpy kid, it doesn't matter if the vocabulary isnt particularly challenging - reading is the goal and with lots of illustrations for page it's less overwhelming.
Skullduggery and Tom Yates are both popular series at that age and the Artemis Fowl ones also worth a read
Or try short stories, Roald Dahl short stories are on the right side of gruesome for that age and ofcourse goosebumps.

I was given bought this for Christmas and it’s gorgeous - filled with beautiful illustrations and facts. Might inspire him to read the books!

I’m a massive Harry Potter fan but have zero interest in reading the Cursed Child as it is just the script. Scripts need actors to bring them to life and I wouldn’t get enjoyment reading one. The show itself is a marvel as it is all brought together and to life by brilliant acting talent, lighting, and special effects, but the actual story is comparatively weak and a little naff. If he hasn’t read the main 7 HP books I recommend them.

might be dated recommendations but I liked Holes and A Series Of Unfortunate Events around that age.

IrrationallyVexed · 31/12/2023 09:37

If you can run to it, get one of the illustrated books. They're gorgeous!

Scrantonicity2 · 31/12/2023 09:52

Can you get the books and read them together? So you read a few pages then he does, at bedtime or something?

I echo this being a lovely book, with lots of writing as well as illustrations.

Avariceagain · 31/12/2023 10:49

Would he read Quidditch through the Ages or Fantastic Beasts and Where to find them? They are both books by Rowling and are mentioned in the Harry Potter books. They are short and easy reads.

PeppaPigStinks · 07/01/2024 19:43

The Harry Potter audio books are amazing as they are read by Stephen fry!
I had a very reluctant reader who is now a complete book worm, and I attribute it to audible!

HermioneWeasley · 07/01/2024 19:45

Why has he specified the Cursed Child?
