I wonder if anyone has any suggestions please.

I read a few detective series, but need a new one to get into for the winter.

I’ve read:

Elly Griffiths’ Ruth Galloway series. (Really liked)
Also her Harbinder Kaur series.
Strike novels. (Loved)
Jackson Brodie. (Loved)
P. D. James’ books.
Most Agatha Christie.
Anthony Hotowitz Hawthorn and Magpie Murders series. (Really liked)
Tried the Simon Serralier, but didn’t love.
Read all the Ann Cleeves series. (Quite liked)
Read a fair few Val McDermid. Too graphic for me really.

I have a Peter May upstairs, but haven’t read it yet.

Any great series I’m missing?

Thanks!

Louise Penny's Inspector Gamache series. Just excellent. Build into something far richer and deeper than straightforward crime. I love them!!

Almostlegible · 19/11/2023 22:39

Which Peter May do you have?

MadeinBelfast · 19/11/2023 22:47

Jane Casey's Maeve Kerrigan books and the DI Fawley series by Cara Hunter are great.

JellyBabyToManual · 19/11/2023 22:49

Angela Marson - Kim stone series

aliasname · 19/11/2023 22:52

If you like 1920s, Kate Shackleton series by Frances Brady.

also the Thursday Murder Club

DoverWight · 19/11/2023 22:59

The Maisie Dobbs series is one I have enjoyed recently & Inspector Montalbano.

SecretVictoria · 19/11/2023 23:00

The early Roy Grace novels by Peter James are pretty good. The later ones are a bit repetitive and the main mystery in his life turns out to be of so little consequence after a massive build up.

Anyway:

Kerry Wilkinson - Jessica Daniel and Andrew Hunter series, they are separate series but do cross over a bit. His standalone ones are good but they’re mostly psychological thrillers.

The early Agatha Raisin by M C Beaton are quite fun, but the later ones are daft.

Redshoeblueshoe · 19/11/2023 23:02

I love the Sean Duffy books by Adrian Mckinty. Set in Northern Ireland during the troubles.

SecretVictoria · 19/11/2023 23:02

Oh, I also enjoy the Campion series by Margery Allingham.

And the Mirabelle Bevan series by Sara Sheridan. Again though, the ‘big secret’ in her life just kind of falls flat.

Lizzieregina · 19/11/2023 23:02

Harry Bosch by Michael Connelly
Lucas Davenport by John Sandford

Rinkymcdinky · 19/11/2023 23:15

Ooh thanks everyone. Loads to look into.

I’ve read the Richard Osman series. Also enjoyed.
For some reason I didn’t think of it.

The Peter May I have is The Lewis Man which I think is the second in a trilogy.

I tried a Rebus years back. Maybe I should try again. I do like things set in Scotland.

I saw people recommending the Gamache series on here recently. I must say I forgot to look it up, so will def put that on the list.

Jane Casey's Maeve Kerrigan books and the DI Fawley series by Cara Hunter are great.

Another vote for Jane Casey. Excellent.

Any book written by JD Kirk

LaurieStrode · 20/11/2023 02:53

Britt Montero series by Edna Buchanan. Be sure to read it in order.

For light/cosy, the "cat who..." series by Lillian Jackson Braun. Set in a semi -fictionalized version of Michigan, USA. Read in order or it won't make sense.

LaurieStrode · 20/11/2023 02:54

Almost forgot but the Perveen Mistry and Rei Shimura series by Sujata Massey are fantastic.

crumpet · 20/11/2023 03:19

Period writers such as Dorothy L Sayers and Georgette Heyer, if you like Agatha Christie.

grannyjacob · 20/11/2023 04:07

As you like things set in Scotland-
Stuart MacBride’s Logan McRae series, set in/around Aberdeen.
Denzil Meyrick’s DCI Daley series, set in the fictional Kinloch.
James Oswald’s Inspector McLean series, set in Edinburgh.
Quintin Jardine’s Bob Skinner series, set in Edinburgh.
Also, you said you found that Val McDermid can be too graphic - have you tried her Karen Pirie series? Much less graphic, one was recently televised.

Riverlee · 20/11/2023 04:16

Father Cadfael
