DH was given the Mistborn Trilogy and loved it. He never has time to read but is inspired to make time after loving this series.

If you like this author what other books of his would you recommend please? I’d like to get him a couple of books for Christmas.

Robin Hobb (Farseer Trilogy, etc), Patrick Rothfuss and Garth Nix are authors that I have enjoyed. Has he read any of the Song of Fire and Ice books (Game of Thrones)? I think Philip Pullman is great even though they are children's books - they actually have adult themes and can be quite dark.

my personal favourite is Robin Hobb although she is head and shoulders above Sanderson in terms of storytelling and writing ability. Start with Assassins Apprentice.

I wouldn’t bother with Patrick Rothfuss though. Book 1 was a breath of fresh air, book 2 wasn’t as good and fans have been waiting for about 10 years for book 3. It’s never coming out. He just gets pissed off with his fans for asking about it

Joe Abercrombie?

Robin Hobb - she’s a brilliant writer.

Robert Jordan - the Wheel of Time series (Sanderson actually completed the final book after Robert Jordan died).

Adrian Tchaikovsky - I’ve only read his science fiction books, but he’s written fantasy books as well (the Shadows of the Apt series).

I agree. I absolutely loved the first book, and rushed to read the second, since then it's been a hell of wait. I've given up on ever reading the 3rd book, despite having a lovely prologue in my book that says Well.... I've already written them. So you won't have to wait forever for them to come out.

I've enjoyed books by Garth Nix and Ursula LeGuin, but admit I feel spolit by how quickly Sanderson writes and releases books. Grin

Also Robert Jordan’s wheel of time series - Sanderson was given the job of finishing the series after the author got ill and passed away.

there’s an awful lot of books in that series!

Sanderson.
Tress of the emerald sea is excellent and recent.
Steelheart is a balm against the plauge of superhero films.
Elantris

Honnomushi · 19/11/2023 09:50

Tress of the Emerald Sea, Yumi and the Nightmare Painter and Elantris are all stand alone novels by Brandon Sanderson. You could also give him Way of Kings, the first book in the Stormlight Archives to see if he likes it. Or there's the Wax & Wane series also set in the Mistborn world.

Oh read your op as ds so was avoiding to much sex and violence.

I've just finished naomi novaks scholarmance trilogy which was one of the best things I've read for years.

Her temerare series is great too (if you like an alternative take on dragons)

Have you read Uprooted? That’s her best book in my opinion but it is a stand-alone one

Another good series

@GetTheWinterQuiltOut

OMG can we be friends!! Agree Uprooted was stunning, and hit me deeply. I didn't recommend it because it has a very soft magic system compared to mistborn but then so does the Scholormance i suppose. I'm reading spinning silver currently, Novak is amazing and reminds me a bit of Sanderson, really diverse story lines and puts a lot of books out, so the best recommendation for a SanderFan.

OP i would just buy all of Sanderson work, i've yet to find a bad one and technically they all exist in the same universe (the cosmere) anyway.

HallieRaspberry · 19/11/2023 15:29

I liked Warbreaker by Sanderson even more than Mistborn so I would definitely recommend that one. I wasn't a fan of Tress of the Emerald Sea personally, it is a very different style.

My favourite book of this year is The Will of the Many by James Islington which I recommend to all fantasy fans as it was a great time with an interesting world/magic system. It's fast paced and the main character is in an interesting position of not being able to trust anyone. It is book one of a planned series.

Hobb's books are popular but quite slow so you have to be in it for the long haul with those. As others have said, Wheel of Time is a massive commitment.

For a series recommendation I would suggest the Black Prism which is book one of five of Brent Weeks' Lightbringer series. It's easy to fly through despite the length and I enjoyed the morally grey hero and the mind blowing plot twists. It also has a cool magic system based on different colours of light.

@Luckydog7 youve reminded me I haven’t got the most recent scholomance book! I don’t know how I’ve overlooked that! Off to rectify that now…

Also if you haven’t read Circe by Madeline Miller I think you might enjoy that too

Luckydog7 · 19/11/2023 19:02

@GetTheWinterQuiltOut

The last if the three is my favorite when everything...well I won't say anything other then I was blown away by the storytelling and the complexity of the plot over three books. Read it, you won't be disappointed.

Luckydog7 · 19/11/2023 19:03

And thanks for the recommendation its in my kindle basket.

Luckydog7 · 19/11/2023 19:10

Had to look it up as forgotten the name. The inheritance trilogy by NK Jemsin was great.
