I just finished The latest in the Strike series, Running Grave and loved it.

I've started the Rithmatist by Brandon Sanderson and it hasn't caught me yet. I've listened to others of his books and first heard of him when listening to The Wheel of Time series. I've listened to all of Game of Thrones. I really liked The Name of the Wind and I'm still waiting for the final book.

Others I like Harry Potter, Hunger Games, The Seven Sisters, detective series like Denzil and Pasco, books that flit between the past and the future, WW2 books, John Grisham, Liane Moriarty, gave a few James bonds a go, all of Outlander.

Anything you think I'd like? I like the books to be long, very long if possible.

Have you tried Robin Hobb's The Farseer Trilogy (or other series by her), Jeff Wheeler's Harbinger series (again or others) or Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials series?

David Jackson I'm not keen on his US detective series, but the stories based in the UK I've enjoyed. I think it's because his characters, even the deeply flawed ones, have some redeeming features.
If you like the past and present day Barbra Erskin (not sure if I've got her last name right) is quite good, I used to love them, but I'm not so keen now, think it's just because I'm not a fan of romance anymore (there is some suspense too), but her early books are better than her later ones.
If you like a light hearted and completely ridiculous detective then you'd probably enjoy Agatha raisin.

I haven't read Strike books. Have you tried Elly Griffith's Dr Ruth Galloway Mystery series?

Pashazade · 06/11/2023 14:28

Tad Williams Otherland series is brilliant and his Memory, Sorrow, thorn series is good too.

I have Hobbs and Harbinger in my wish list. I've listened to everything my Philip Pullman. I think we have similar taste! I've been looking at mortal engines, I enjoyed the movie.

I'm still giving the Rithmathist a chance.

This looks promising, it is really long which I like because I listen a lot. It also seems very elaborate

Thanks, I have put David Jacksons Liverpool 1st book on my play list as it's free. I listened to The Darkest Hour I enjoyed that.

I keep seeing the Agatha Raisin books I think I could enjoy them. I have listened to some Carola Dunn books recently, very plummy and Ms Fisher but enjoyable

Otherland is fantastic. It's totally different to anything and yes very complex and involved. The actual books are all doorstops!

MontyDonsBlueScarf · 06/11/2023 15:45

I like your sort of books but lately I tried Wolf Hall (the version read by Ben Miles) and I found it utterly compelling. Completely relatable especially if you've ever worked in a difficult environment! Also the first in a trilogy so several hours' listening. Very sad to have finished them.

AConvivialHost · 06/11/2023 15:53

Joe Abercrombie's First Law series read by Stephen Pacey is fab. Not fantasy, but I've just finished listening to The Pillars of the Earth read by John Lee and that was a 5star listen as well.

AConvivialHost · 06/11/2023 15:57

Also if you like Patrick Rothfuss, you'll probably like Raymond Feist's Firemane Saga

CobraChicken · 06/11/2023 16:15

I have no idea of the quality of the audiobook version, but try the Sword of Truth series from Terry Goodkind. "Wizard's First Rule" is book one of the series.

Unabletomitigate · 06/11/2023 16:16

Robin Hobb, definitely.
Also try Malazan Book of the Fallen, if you can get into it well worth it.
Also Terry Goodkind, wizards first rule, gets a big draggy at books 6/7 but very good for the first few.

Magicmagician · 06/11/2023 16:19

i have simiLr tastes and also love audio books. I loved listening to Raymond E Feist ‘daughter/servant/mistress of the empire’ series, also the Gentleman bastard/Locke Lamora series by Scott Lynch are great.

slightly different - Jodi Taylor, chronicles of st Mary’s and time police books, amazing narrator on audio book. Not Uber long but 14 in the st Mary’s series plus short stories should keep you going…

also waiting on Patrick Rothfuss here 😂

pontipinemum · 29/11/2023 09:29

@Magicmagician I started Raymond E Feists Daughter of the Empire last night. I'm only about 2 hours in and already love it. It is def the sort of book I like.

I know when will the last Patrick Rothfuss Kingkiller book be out! I have honestly forgotten half of what happened in the 1st two books but I'm sure I'll pick it back up.
