I'm getting into books again thanks to Audible after never having time to sit and read so looking for recommendations.

The genres I like are historical fiction, fantasy, bit of science fiction, drama/ mystery, books that make you think. I'd like to try some of the classics but might look to modern literature first.

Don't really like chick flicks, or romance that much but a bit of romance as side plot is OK.
I just finished my first Jojo Moyes book and it was pleasant but I wasn't blown away. Found it a bit predictable and contrived at times.

If there are any stand out books that you think should be on the list let me know.

Robert Harris - great for historical fiction. A lot are set in WW2, but he writes books in other historical periods also. Good storyteller.

John Marr - set in the near future. The books do link to one another, but are also stand alone. These books certainly make you think.

clare Macintosh - just discovered her. Only read two books so far, but superb author. Eg. Hostage

Three Hours - Rosemary Lupton, definitely worth a read

The science fiction series from penguin are not only beautiful but are imo more dystopian and really interesting reads.

Lissa Evans- Crooked Heart, Old Baggage, V for Victory- are good. WW2 fiction. Crooked Heart is the best.

For historical fiction anything by Sarah Waters. My favourite was Fingersmith.

I recently finished a book called The Martian by Andy Weir - it was fantastic , I couldn’t put it down…definitely a good one if you are wanting to get back into reading.

Mothership4two · 04/11/2023 17:36

Fingersmith and The Martian are both gripping books

A few of books I've enjoyed recently from the Historical Fiction section are:

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

Blood & Beauty by Sarah Dunant

And The Alice Network by Kate Quinn.
